The Dark Triad & Online Dating
Gentlemen,
Welcome again to Menplus40, where today we'll delve into the Dark Triad.
In past discussions, we've examined the Cluster B Spectrum and the Female Narcissist in various contexts. We've also touched on traits of the male Narcissist for perspective.
Today, our focus lies on the Dark Triad and its role in online dating. As always, you can find the related research papers linked in the description below.
What exactly is the Dark Triad? It's a trio composed of narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism.
Statistics indicate men typically display higher levels of these traits compared to women, but there are exceptions in both genders. For instance, 10 years ago, clinical diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) would have been 75% men and 25% women. Now, that ratio is nearly even. This is based on NPD diagnoses, not personal assessments of narcissistic traits.
Our endgame? Foster healthy relationships and discern behaviours that aren't conducive to lasting, high-quality relationships.
The Dark Triad embodies three core personality traits:
1. Narcissism: It includes a sense of entitlement and a craving for admiration. There are two types: grandiose and vulnerable narcissism. The former is marked by an exaggerated sense of superiority, while the latter is driven by feelings of inadequacy and a strong longing for social approval.
2. Psychopathy: Characterised by traits such as aggression, impulsivity, and a lack of empathy. There are two dimensions: primary psychopathy (encompassing callousness and manipulation), and secondary psychopathy (incorporating impulsivity and hostility).
3. Machiavellianism: This is defined by a readiness to manipulate others to achieve personal goals.
Prior research suggests that individuals with high Dark Triad traits are more prone to inauthentic self-presentation on social platforms. This leads us to believe that such traits may shape online dating personas as well.
A recent study found that vulnerable narcissism significantly predicts inauthentic self-presentation in online dating. It also highlighted antisocial dating behaviours such as ghosting (suddenly ceasing communication with a romantic interest) and bread crumbing (intermittently flirting without intending to advance the relationship). Both these actions have been linked to decreased life satisfaction and happiness for those affected.
The study found those exhibiting ghosting and bread crumbing behaviours to have higher levels of vulnerable narcissism, secondary psychopathy (for ghosting), and Machiavellianism (for bread crumbing). This implies that individuals high in Dark Triad traits are more likely to misrepresent themselves and engage in destructive dating behaviours.
This information is crucial for online daters. It's important to be alert to signs of inauthenticity and to exercise caution with someone who has a history of ghosting or bread crumbing. Previous research aligns with these findings, suggesting those high in vulnerable narcissism are more likely to commit intimate partner violence. Always approach online interactions with diligence and discernment.
In conclusion, this study illuminates the link between Dark Triad traits, inauthentic self-presentation, and antisocial dating behaviours in the realm of online dating. The emphasis lies in being mindful of inauthenticity and potential harmful behaviours when navigating online dating.
Links to the relevant studies can be found in the description below.
Regardless of these findings, always prioritise healthy relationships and set sound boundaries and standards for yourself and others.
Remember, this summary is not a diagnosis—it's information to help you spot potential red flags.
Until our next time, stay safe.
