In this episode, Matt talks with Ryan Bivens from the Meridian, Idaho D&B Supply about frost-free hydrants. This episode was recorded in June 2017. It might seem like an odd time to talk about frost-proof water hydrants, but if you want to be able to water your livestock next winter, you want to make certain these hydrants are ready to go now.
A frost-free hydrant is designed to drain water back into the ground below the freeze line. In this way, a frost-free hydrant is better for watering livestock than a standard spigot since you can use it in the dead of winter without worrying about frozen pipes.
Frost-free hydrants need to be buried deep the ground, perhaps, more than six feet deep in some cases. And there may be more to them than you thought.
