In this episode, Sam and Anna compare their two education systems, from the age children start school to exams, university, and everything in between.
Along the way, we talk about starting school at five vs seven, why grouping children by ability can be harmful, the Polish "gymnasium" that no longer exists, comprehensive vs specialised subjects, and why Sam questions whether his expensive politics degree was really worth the money.

Do you ask a question in English and find that people don't actually answer it? The problem might be the way you structure your question, not your grammar.
In this video I share a simple four-step structure to ask clearer questions in English, especially at work and in meetings: introduce the topic, give the context, signpost the question, then ask it and stop. I also share useful signposting phrases you can start using today, from direct ones like "So my question is this" to softer ones like "I was wondering..."
If you often speak for a while before asking your question and people forget what you actually asked, this simple structure will make a big difference.

What was your worst job? In this episode, Sam and Anna go through their full job histories, from the best to the worst. Sam talks about delivering newspapers as a teenager, working in a pound shop where everything costs one pound, getting sarcastic with rude customers at a supermarket, and secretly being told not to mention his politics degree while gardening at rich people's houses.
Anna shares her journey through warehouses, factories, and art gallery security before completely changing direction at university and becoming a self-employed landscape architect.
We also talk about how bad jobs put things into perspective, why the customer isn't always right, and how sometimes a career change is the best decision you'll ever make.

How did Sam go from studying politics at university to becoming an English teacher for seven years? In this episode, Anna asks Sam about his journey, from getting rejected for a council job, working miserable night shifts in a supermarket, booking a one-way flight to Madrid with almost no Spanish, teaching seven-year-olds who'd been kicked out of other schools, and eventually building an online English community.
We also talk about the ship/sheep/beach problem, why most university degrees don't prepare you for real jobs, and the difference between teaching in person and teaching online.

We also talk about how Anna designed and built her own house in Poland, why all new-build houses in the UK look exactly the same, the disaster of UK train infrastructure, and what "dog eat dog world" means.

What's the best way to actually improve your English? In this episode, Sam and Anna talk about why learning English inside an online community is different from learning alone, working with a tutor, or going to a traditional school. Anna shares how she went from not being able to speak at all to completely forgetting she was even speaking English during a conversation.
We also talk about why being forced to speak English with people from different countries is so powerful, how meeting people from all over the world makes learning fun instead of feeling like homework, and why practice makes progress, not perfect.

Should you try to sound British or American? Does mixing accents and vocabulary matter? In this episode, Sam and Anna talk about why most English learners worry too much about their accent and what actually matters when it comes to being understood. Sam explains when accent reduction is worth thinking about and when it's not, and why he actually likes hearing people's native accents come through.
We also talk about how speaking another language can change how you feel about yourself, Anna's detailed shadowing technique for improving pronunciation and fluency, and why shifting from "English learner" to "English user" can change everything.
