Segment Routing is the term widely used in the industry to refer to Source Packet Routing In Networking (SPRING), as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Cisco has pioneered Segment Routing since 2012 and has led the standardization efforts with the support of a group of lead operators, resulting in few RFCs and over 50 active internet-drafts.

5G brings in significant changes to the mobile architecture. It relies heavily on virtualization and containerization, splits the mobile control and user plane and introduces network slicing. In the radio space new spectrum is available and the Radio Access Network infrastructure has been de-aggregated into three discrete components that can be integrated into a single unit or split across different locations.

The Future of Network Automation with Dr. Mark Mortensen from ACG Research
Where are we in automating network operations? Nowhere near where we thought we would be by now, nor where Network Operators believe they need to be to survive. But four key software breakthroughs have led us to the edge of the next generation of autonomous networking, with implications more profound than previous revolutions in network technology and operations – the 10xNetwork.

We discuss Segment Routing consideration during the COVID-19 pandemic and break it up to three priorities to consider.

1) Make the network more robust

• thanks to TI-LFA, whenever and wherever a node or a link fails in the network, connectivity can be restored within 50ms. SR increases network resiliency

• SR is seminal to E2E network slicing implementation
• Customer applications can be mapped to network slices according to the SLAs expressed by applications.

3) Squeeze more out of your network

• SR advanced traffic engineering capabilities let Service providers dynamically reroute traffic, leading to increase network usage up to 80% or more.
• Only SR can deliver TE at mass scale

The Public Cloud has forever changed enterprise architecture and the debate on public vs private cloud is unlikely to resolve to a single answer, resulting in enterprises building next-generation private infrastructure. Building a scalable kubernetes cluster on private infrastructure depends on developing an k8s integrated network infrastructure design.

During this in Educational Video Briefing you will learn from a recent project for a large European industrial company, we designed and implemented a medium scale multi-zone k8s complex on bare metal hardware, focusing on the network. We will discuss how we selected infrastructure components to support k8s, storage, and external access while attempting to maintain simplicity of operations, including some brief demonstrations.

Cloudbuilding & k8s is a rapidly evolving, using hindsight we will discuss the broader decisions and learning from undertaking this project and look to the future.
