Intrigue, Drama and Surprise. Keeps you in Suspense!
First off a confession: I know the author. We attended undergrad school at the College of Wooster. 2nd confession, I rarely read fiction. But I had a motivation here and so I bought the book along with 6 more copies for family and colleagues. Because of the personal nature of my relationship to the author I will refer to her by her first name, Elise. Coincidentally, I and Elise are both English language instructors, however, she is a gifted writer and this book really brings out her gift in many ways. 1st, much like a Grisham novel, there is a problem to solve. There is also a mystery to reveal. With these factors surrounded by colorful prose and descriptive language that leaves you captivated with a sense of wonder and intrigue, I truly was left wanting more. Elise, like John Grisham before her, left me guessing until the end who the Ghost was and what was the message regarding the deer. I guessed wrong. But isn't that what creative writing is supposed to elicit? Absolutely! As a side note, I like the fact that the print is large and the book is interspersed with short and longer chapters. Well done!

I'm not normally a YA guy, but this short novel is written in such a lovely and dreamy style that it immediately drew me in. The prose feels poetic and poignant and just flows in a way that the best YA novels do - walking the line perfectly between the kind of direct simplicity that works best for the genre and truly poetic beauty in writing. There are moments and turns of phrase that so perfectly seem to capture the feelings and memories of growing up that I found sincerely moving. The confusion and excitement and rebelliousness of being a teenager. The grief of losing a loved one and the feelings of powerlessness in being young and feeling unable to help during the time of loss... Truly and perfectly written in a way so very lovely and so very true to life.
The Deer is easy to recommend and one I'll be sharing with my daughters, both coming of age themselves.
Loved it!!
Loved this book! Excellent teen choice but good for adults too. A real page turner.
