As game developers wanted to create games for iPhone you need to get a mac! However, generally, the choices are with the latest Intel I series but Apple designs and developed their chip called M1. This chip was designed to utilize Apple's hardware and software.
In the past, I owned a Macbook pro with an Intel I7 and it was a pretty powerful system. However, due to a design fault, I started getting ready to retire my poor like Macbook pro. After this sad fact, I was thinking about getting a new Mac mini because of budgeting reasons. I was considering going with the Intel I7 again but of the luck that I have had with them. However, after watching the new M1 chip reviews, I saw that everyone was getting amazing performance from the chip. So I went out and pick myself up a Mac mini with the M1 chip.
The bad about the M1 chip Now that it has been over a month with my workflow. I have quite a bit to say about it as a game developer. Let's first start with the bad stuff. Before the big updates, I was having problems with using Unity, Jetbrains Ryder syncing files amongst themselves. The issue was triggered if I ran to Unity before Ryder finished updating. This problem made me lose some progress because Ryder needs to finish this sync before you can save. The next issue I had was that any piece of software that was not optimized for the M1 chip was trash! Every single program that I ran from Jetbrain that wasn't optimized stuttered and even froze before these updates.
The only ones that didn't were media creation software. The good about the M1 chip After the macOS Big Surr update, this Mac mini is a freaking champ. Most of the problems that I was happening have gone away. Once in a while, I will get occasional stutter but nothing as bad as before. Especially one working with Unity and Ryder. I have been able to test the rest API functionality using Local by Flywheel while Unity and Ryder are all running. Which is very impressive! On top of that my video editing process has been top-notched and I can say the same for photo editing using Photoshop. The same thing can be said about using Lightroom for touching up and color-correcting images.
Lastly, the biggest improvement that I have seen is in 3d modeling in blender 3D. Before the update blender was okay and would become very laggy when UV texturing a model. It would stutter and even freeze to the point of force-quitting out of blender 3D in some cases. Which you could imagine is highly annoying. Especially after working on a model for a couple of hours and lose some progress because of the computer.
