Critic Reviews:
"Hart fans will appreciate what were later to become the author's signature elements: the Lowcountry setting, the vivid physical description, and surprising twists." - Publishers Weekly
"Verdict: Turn up your gothic-romantic suspense meter for this spooky Low Country treat. Hart's 1986 standalone has enough espionage and intrigue to keep readers guessing. Recommend this quick read to those longing for the old-fashioned romantic suspense novels of Phyllis Whitney or Victoria Holt." - Library Journal
"Faulkner's well-known line 'The past is never dead. It's not even past' could have been written for Carolyn Hart's The Devereaux Legacy. A romance? A ghost story? A mystery? The novel is all three and more, as heroine Leah Devereaux sifts through dark family secrets seeking to find out who she really is! Once again Hart displays her impressive versatility as a writer." - Katherine Hall Page, author of the Faith Fairchild Mystery series
"A splendid mix of bone-chilling suspense, long-buried secrets, and ghostly hauntings. Add a tender romance set against the backdrop of a South Carolina plantation, and you have a masterpiece." - Mary Kennedy, author of The Talk Radio Mysteries
"Mysteries in the past and the present haunt a young woman in this fun read for the fan of romantic suspense." - JoAnna Carl, author of the Chocoholic Mystery series

Lost at sea, has a tombstone, but she is alive. What happened?
This is a great story. It kept me guessing until almost the last page when the murderer was discovered. A girl grows up believing that she has no family except for her paternal grandmother who has just died. While cleaning out the house, she discovers a letter and a magazine article about a white lady ghost showing up at the Devereaux Plantation in South Carolina. The girls' mothers maiden name was Devereaux.
Is there a connection? Does she have family that she was never told about? Why? What does all this mean? She decides to investigate.
She travels to Mefford, South Carolina and discovers her own tombstone along with ones for her parents and the grandmother who just died.
The tombstones say that the family was lost at sea. She goes to the Plantation and discovers her maternal grandmother and three cousins. And the story takes off from there. This is one book that you won't want to put down. There are 174 pages and it was published in September 1999. Buy it, you will not be sorry.
This book is different than Carolyn Hart's other books.
I enjoyed The Devereaux Legacy very much. I have read all of Hart's other mysteries, but I felt that The Devereaux Legacy was more of a romantic mystery.
