Coffee’s meteoric rise in popularity was not always assured. From its African origins, spread through the Arabic world, and proliferation through Europe and beyond, it has faced controversy and condemnation at every step.

The same story played out time and time again – scepticism and mistrust, taxation and prohibition, which eventually gave way to acceptance and widespread use.
