My Mum (aged 95) has been talking about the Devils Hour - apparently there is a film with that title being made in a big house close to where she lives.
This piece is called The Devils Hour.
In the 1980's there was a very good TV series "The Edges of Darkness" - the music for the series was composed by Eric Clapton and Michael Nyman.
I was too young to hear early Clapton in his prime in the band Cream ( honest ) and this was my first listen to his music. He ( together with Nyman) made the acoustic guitar sound haunting ( rather than its romantic sound)
In this piece I've tried to do that. The normal comforting sounds of a classical guitar have an underlying uncomfortable accompaniment. Even the last chord ( which is basically just an A minor chord) is disturbing.
My bad time of night is consistently around 3.40am ( as I have made mention before ).... the following describes the Devils Hour.....
3 AM - “The Devil’s Hour,” or, “The Witching Hour,” which is believed to be the time of night when most supernatural events occur. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, there is a line: “‘Tis now the very witching time of night, When churchyards yawn, and hell itself breathes out.”
Oh good grief...
