I interviewed Bri Webb about a month ago and to up until now I’ve been struggling with myself about publishing it. I’ve been ashamed because I didn’t know exactly who Michael Brown was when I initially interviewed her. As soon as she told me his name, I quickly Googled his name only to find out that he was THE Michael Brown that had lost his life in Ferguson, MO. - the case that rocked our country years ago. I’ve thought a lot about this interview for the last month. About how much I love our country because it has always been fair to me and my family. I’ve thought about how the relationship I’ve had with law enforcement has worked great for me. Now I’m realizing just how opposite it is for too many families. Our great country isn’t fair for all of us, it’s not working for all of us. Our government isn’t protecting all of us. I’m also coming to terms with the fact that if it isn’t working for ALL of us, NONE of us should be satisfied.

You might be aware that black folks make up only 1% of the population around here. What you might NOT know is how it feels to be one of seven black kids that graduate from your extremely white and wealthy high school in Newport Beach. You also might not know what it feels to feel like to be “other,” or “an outsider.” Take a listen to Rashaan who talks about his experiences and how it has shaped the man he has turned out to be today. It is my hope that by all of us trying to know each other better, we will have a better understanding of what each other‘s experiences are like. Is it possible that through stories, conversation , sharing life experience, that we will be able to see each other as what we are... fellow human beings? I hope so!

Empowered, Presence like an Amazon, Born Leader, Takes up Space, Fearless, Bold, Educated. These are just some of the ways that I described Auri when I first laid eyes on her at our local Huntington Beach protest. Auri arrived on the scene later in the day than me, the energy she brought was captivating. I couldn’t take my eyes off her! She was on the bullhorn, settling down the agitation between groups, giving a blessing over a little black baby, and most importantly leading in such a way that she put conversation and education first. She is a modern day hero! Have a listen and you might fall in love with this strong female leader just as I have!
