During the early-to-mid 1960s, the William Moore chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) played a pivotal role in Broome County's political landscape. Though CORE has been commended for its achievements in the South, its impact in northern communities has received far less attention. In fact, the Broome County community has all but forgotten its local CORE chapter. By researching its protests against housing and employment discrimination, this original podcast identifies some of the chapter's main goals, organizational tactics, and explores the degree to which it was successful in creating social and political change in Broome County. It also examines the role that the chapter played in the iconic March on Washington. Drawing on local newspapers and oral histories to tell the chapter's story, this project paints a picture of an ambitious organization whose impact and legacy is worth rediscovering.
