On November 25, 1997, 16 year old Karen Marie Mitchell was working at a day care center in Eureka, California, over her Thanksgiving holiday vacation from school. After spending some time in the afternoon with her Aunt at her nearby shoe store, Karen set off on foot to return to the daycare center. With the exception of one single eyewitness, no one has ever reported seeing or hearing from Karen Mitchell again.  Investigators have never quite figured out what happened to her; she just walked away from her aunt’s shoe store one afternoon, headed for a job, and that was it.
