Publisher's Summary:
The Diviners Tale is at once a journey of self-discovery and an unorthodox murder mystery, a tale of the fantastic and a family chronicle told by an otherwise ordinary woman.
Walking a lonely forested valley in upstate New York, Cassandra Brooks comes upon the shocking vision of a young girl hanged from a tree. When she returns with authorities, the girl has vanished, leaving in question Cassandras credibility, if not her sanity. The next day, on a return visit, a dazed, mute missing girl emerges from the woods, aliveand the very picture of Cassandras hanged girl. What follows is the narrative of ever deepening and increasingly bizarre divinations that will lead this gifted young woman, the struggling single mother of twin boys, hurtling toward a past shed long since thought was behind her.
When Cass dark forebodings take on tangible form, she is forced to confront a life spiraling out of control. And soon she is locked in a mortal chess match with a real-life killer who has haunted her since before she can remember.
Critic Reviews:
This novel detonates the very notion of genre. And it works because it is riveting, insightful, sentence by sentence charged with feeling. (Peter Straub, New York Times best-selling author)
Bradford Morrowis a mesmerizing storyteller who casts an irresistible spell. (Joyce Carol Oates, National Book Awardwinning author)
Members Reviews:
Interesting story, but very slow...
Overall, I liked the story and the concept, but it was so slow. And predictable. I like to listen to books when I run, walk and work out on the elliptical, and I prefer books that are faster paced. But, it wasn't a bad book, just not one of my favorites.
Engrossing!
Beautifully woven with her past is the diviner's present and foreshadowing of the future. The language is lovely and the reader sublime.
Intriguing, interesting.
Loved the colorful language, however at times I truly wondered where the story was going. It was interesting, but wished there was calotype more suspense.
