Episode 3 of Shea Hello to the Nerds came together on July 5, right in the middle of MLB’s Star Spangled Weekend, as The Shea Hello Newsletter and I were catching up live while games were still rolling across Peacock.

The Marlins came up early. Casey made the case for Miami as a legitimate playoff contender. Twenty and six in June, Kyle Stowers rediscovering his 2025 power stroke, and Sandy Alcantara going eight strong. There is enough there to take them seriously, even if the NLCS feels like a stretch.

Nolan McLean has the most filthy spin rate ever measured. He also can’t find the strike zone right now. Those two things are connected, and we got into why.

All-Star snubs came next. Sonny Gray is 10-1 with a sub-3 ERA on a bad team and didn’t make it. That one stings.

Vlad Guerrero Jr. pulled out with a back injury. Five hundred million dollars on the line and a team that needs him healthy. Hard to argue with the decision.

We ended the podcast talking about the bill coming due from players that participated in the World Baseball Classic. There are enough clues in the performance this year that something is off, and the one common denominator is the WBC. Does it hold true? Tune in next week, it will be discussed.

We named a team that nobody is taking seriously as a legitimate World Series contender. We called out a franchise that is spending nearly $400 million and has completely lost the room. We had strong words for a former coach who needs to sit down and be quiet. We talked about a pitcher who might be the most dominant arm in baseball right now, and another one who might be on his way out of town before August.

The Rangers came up. The Pirates came up. The trade deadline came up.

And we agreed on something that surprised both of us.

The Texas Rangers are leading the AL West at exactly .500. The Chicago White Sox, who lost 121 games two years ago, are tied for first in the AL Central. The Tampa Bay Rays lead the AL East over the Yankees on winning percentage, and the Yankees just went 3-and-7 in their last ten.

Meanwhile, the best team in baseball is 54-and-30 and their rookie catcher just had a very public breakdown with Shohei Ohtani on a 101-mile-an-hour fastball. Junior Caminero hit six home runs and drove in thirteen runs this week and nobody is talking about it. James Wood is leading baseball in a metric that says he should be the MVP conversation, and nobody’s saying his name.

The chaos is real. The numbers make sense of it.

Jacob Misiorowski’s last few starts have been must-see, and you’ve heard all about it. But when you run him through the model, there’s a layer underneath that I haven’t heard anyone else talk about. Is he the runaway NL Cy Young favorite right now?

A 21-year-old first baseman went 10-for-25 with 3 home runs and 8 RBI and nobody noticed because Aaron Judge was busy going on the IL with a rib fracture.

The AL East is officially chaos.

Tampa Bay went 1-and-5 last week and is now clinging to the division lead on winning percentage. Aaron Judge is on the IL with a rib stress fracture. Austin Wells is out too. The Yankees are banged up and the division is anyone’s race.

Meanwhile Atlanta keeps rolling at 45-and-21, Milwaukee is pulling away in the NL Central, and the NL wild card is a five-team fight with half a game separating third from fifth.

James Wood is quietly becoming one of the best hitters in baseball. Jacob Misiorowski has the best pitching score in the entire analytics suite. And Colt Emerson, who is only twenty years old, is in Seattle’s lineup while the Mariners fight for the AL West.
