Distinct on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 3/28/22   About Distinct -   At the age of sixteen, Distinct (Samantha Makeiff) was a little young to be getting into the electronic scene, but a series of events had started to show her the way. Starting her DJing career from there, it wasn’t long until she was out purchasing her first pieces of vinyl. Due to an extensive musical background it was only a matter of time before she was dabbling in more than house music, spinning a variety of other genres including drum and bass, breaks, and ghetto funk. Her versatility and ear for top notch electronica has landed her multiple gigs across Canada. Eager to share her music and support her local scene, Distinct has involved herself with a plethora of local Calgarian production and show crews. Helping bring some of the biggest names into Calgary has proven to be a busy and encouraging use of time, with lots of time also going to pursuing production. With them and a few other collectives, she currently helps to promote, perform and aid in the success of their popular events featuring the likes of Freaky Flow, Black Sun Empire, Dub FX and Dillon Francis to name a few.  After placing 4th in "Calgary's Next Top DJ" and a recent interview and article in (djmag.ca) she caught the attention of the scouts from the Drum & Bass Girls of Canada. It was no surprise they’d soon be asking her to join the team of women making noise across the country. Patricia Baloge on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 3/1/22   About Patricia Baloge -   Patricia Baloge is an Afrohouse / House DJ from Montpellier, France who is now based in Brooklyn, New York. She was touched by music at a very young age and being brought up in a Ghanaian household allowed her to be naturally surrounded by Highlife and Afrobeats. The musically eclectic environment that France offers through its mix of cultures, also gave her the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of musical genres such as Dancehall, Rai, Variete Francaise, Dombolo, Pop, Rnb, Electro and Hip hop. It was not before spending some time in New York as an adult that she finally discovered Afrohouse and that completely changed her musical landscape. Sarah Main on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 2/16/22   About Sarah Main -   Surrounded by art from an early age Sarah started her painting career at 16. She went on to study Fine Arts at Sydney University.   At age 19 Sarah became enamored by the burgeoning Sydney house music scene and chose DJing as her full time profession. She played throughout Australia until her relocation to Ibiza in 2001.   From 2001 Sarah was the resident DJ at the revered Pacha nightclub for 13 years. She toured for the Pacha brand and her own self branded nights playing at the best clubs and festivals around the world. In Ibiza, she also held residencies at Ushuaia and Heart and the world's no.1 club Space.   In 2019 Sarah returned full time to her primary passion and a bold new style emerged. Her paintings are bright colorful depictions of whimsical characters inspired by her prismatic life and her diverse experiences.   Since 2019 has held 6 successful exhibitions, (solo and group) in Ibiza and Barcelona and has more lined up for 2022.   In 2021 Sarah was one of the founding members of the Misonny Art Festival which had its inauguration at Mas Sorrer in Girona in September. She painted a live mural, presented her physical works with an augmented reality experience, DJ'ed and presented her first NFT collection. The festival was the first in Spain to present blockchain technology with all attendees receiving a POAP- an NFT of attendance designed by Sarah. With over 4000 attendees the festival has been nominated for the best new festival at the European Festival awards this coming March in Portugal.  Sarah's next NFT collection is due to be released this December on Talis Protocol on the Terra blockchain. Bingo Players on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 2/9/22   About the Bingo Players -    Maarten Hoogstraten wasn’t like other kids his age. When he was 10, his friends were buying toys to play with, but Maarten was already spending his cash on vinyl and CDs. “You know how it starts,” he said with a chuckle. “I was the one who bought records when I was young, I bought lots of vinyl, seven-inches, twelve inches, and when CDs came about I bought a lot of CDs. Growing up, I spent all my money on music.”   The producer behind the hit EDM act, Bingo Players, got hooked on electronic music when he was a kid, listening to The Prodigy’s “Out of Space,” and wishing he could make the kind of tunes that were being played on Dutch radio. But, at the time, to make dance music, you needed physical equipment—synthesizers and drum machines—far out of his reach at his age. When he was a teenager, two events would change his life. An early music software program called ProTracker was released, and he would meet Paul Baümer, who would become his musical partner for the better part of the next 15 years until he suddenly passed away from cancer in 2013.   Maarten met Paul through his younger brother in Enschede, Holland, a two-hour drive from Amsterdam. One day, he went over to hang out with Paul’s younger brother, and found that Paul was also making music using ProTracker software. “It was only four channels and was really basic, but it was a start and really fun to do.”   “When we discovered we were both making similar sounding music with the same program we started spending all our time together and became friends right away’” said Maarten.   Over the next decade they began recording; and in 2006 they began recording under the moniker, Bingo Players. Their tracks started to resonate with the EDM crowds in America and abroad. Their songs— featuring buzzing, bouncing synthesizers, crunchy, guitar-like riffs reminiscent of the Chemical Brothers, and powerful, driving beats— are shaped by a memorable lyrical hook or a melody. 2009’s “Devotion” utilizes the catchy vocal hook, and sets it against a funky infectious saxophone riff and syncopated backbeat.   “Most of the time we’d just start with a melody. Then a song would just evolve,” said Maarten of their songwriting process. “We can connect with a song if the melody is strong even though it can still be bare bones. We need to sing along or whistle along or to have an earworm, you know what I mean? Something that sticks in your head.”   Their breakout hit “Cry (Just a Little),” featured a re-recording of the hook from a 1988 Brenda Russell song, “Piano in the Dark.” With the memorable lyric looping around an ebullient melody, it became an instant crossover anthem.   “I was watching VH1 and I saw this ‘Back to the 80s’ program where they played this Brenda Russell song and I thought, ‘Hey, this particular part of the song sounds really cool, maybe we could do something with it in our own style?’”   Though they didn’t start out as DJs, once the demand grew for them to play out live, they learned how to mix on CDJs. Soon, they became regulars on the EDM circuit, playing massive festivals, like Electric Daily Carnival, Tomorrowland, and Coachella.   “I think we started to become better producers once we started to DJ,” he said, noting that they would bring new tunes on the road and play for a crowd to gauge their reaction. In between playing festivals and clubs around the world, the duo found the time to start their own label, Hysteria (a hat tip to Def Leppard, one of their favorite bands), releasing singles from Carl Tricks (“Mad Dash”), MAKJ (“Springen”), and Henry Fong (“Jump”) as well as Bingo Players tunes.   In 2013, they scored one of their biggest coups. An updated version of their 2011 track, “Rattle,” titled, “Get Up” (Rattle),” with LA-based act, Far East Movement, rapping over a bouncy, catchy beat, became a instant hit. When they first played the tune back in 2011, Maarten and Paul didn’t know if audiences liked it, but then, the single started to pick up steam around the world and slowly continued to grow.   It eventually charted in the Top Ten around the world including; Germany, Austria, France, and Australia (where it ended up going double Platinum), Gold in Canada, reaching the coveted #1 spot in the UK charts, and selling over 200,000 records in the U.S., reaching #5 on the dance charts. The success of the single, and the quirky, humorous video featuring ducks squaring off against hoodlums (which now has over 40 million views) helped propel Bingo Players high into the DJ Mag Top 100 list last year.   But in June 2013, at the height of their success, Paul suddenly fell ill. He was diagnosed with cancer. Everyone was shocked. Despite the prognosis, Paul remained optimistic.   In October, Paul took a turn for the worse and he passed away in December 2013. There was an outpouring of support from the EDM community with peers like Hardwell, Steve Aoki, Kaskade, Skrillex and Armin Van Buuren paying tribute on social media, at shows and in the press.   Maarten was stunned and didn’t know what to do. But Paul’s last wishes were for his best friend and his musical partner to keep making music. “He always said to me, ‘If you can find solace and continue what we started, please do so. Please continue the music. Carry on the Bingo Players flag,’” said Maarten. He wasn’t sure if he could carry on. But, he said, “I took a holiday, took some time off to clear my head and think about things. I thought, “Yeah Paul’s right. I should continue, and continue the name and continue his legacy.” After all, they have a library of finished tracks and ideas they worked on together that have yet to be released and Maarten can continue his and Paul’s dream of making the music that they heard on the radio as kids. The scene might have gotten bigger, and the production might be made on something more sophisticated than ProTracker, but, says Maarten, “The vibe is still the same. People want to have a good time, come together, and experience the music.” And Bingo Players live on. Alex Bau on the Virtual Sessions on The DJ Sessions 1/31/22   About Alex Bau -   An affection to vinyl at a very early stage most probably is the perfect precondition to finally ending up playing those vinyls for people. somebody with a musical background. somebody serving and educating the people at the same time. somebody being called dj. This is exactly what happened to alex bau back in the early 90's. He acquired a musical background. He was asked to play records in front of people. He became a dj. Even at that early stage, when still buying loads of records out of several genres, from 70`s disco via lots of 80`s pop, synthpop, wave, gothic rock to 90`s independent, grunge, even hip hop and again the more darker side of synth-based pop music, alex was already very much into this new upcoming style called techno. Like a lot of fellows at these early ravedays, the first contacts to that sound were kind of cheesy and commercial. Those techno trax compilations were not really digging deep into the underground back in the days, but they brought him far enough to question and to become curious on what could be hidden below that superficial surface. Quite soon alex discovered a universe of new sounds, new music and styles, ranging from basic channel, which still is the "soul of techno" for alex, to the frankfurt school of techno with its very own sound, mainly defined by labels like sven väth`s eye q and harthouse. but at the same time he also was very into the early stuff from the berlin-based tresor label or sound from the u.s. like jeff mills and his axis or purpose maker. These sounds served as a kind of basic ingredient on alex` first open to close sets during his first residency at libella, altenmarkt, between 1994 and 1998. a small, dreamy spot close to the alps with that club in the middle of nowhere that made its name across the neighborhood with its alternative, innovative and open minded style. by the way, it's also one of the first spots the mighty dj hell got to dj in the late 80's. versatility was the key back then to keep people in the mood for staying until the very end, something alex preserved until today. creating ups and downs, not just a linear level of energy throughout the night. This was the lesson Alex learned throughout these early years. Though the medium to play music has changed from vinyl to a pretty complex digital dj-setup, the approach is still the same. touring the world from buenos aires to tokyo or from new york to melbourne, playing clubs like tresor, berghain, lehmann, u60311, butan, the egg, rex, flex and countless more or festivals like loveparade, rave on snow, nature one, almost countless releases on numerous labels, including some of the biggest within the techno circus like clr or cocoon plus running his very own labels like toneman from 2000 to 2006, and finally credo since 2007, alex is not about to expect himself to be the superstar dj. The sound he is playing is straight, powerful, bassy and modern. In this respect, despite the search for new sounds, Alex is kind of oldschool in terms of his music selection process. it has to be the music to speak for itself and the vibe created by the selection of music he is presenting which are the dominant factors on how the night goes.
