Many nominal Christians teach a message of identity change, based on claiming what they have not actually received. But our baptism into Christ must correspond to the reality of a new life lived under the authority of the Spirit. The Spirit gives us the exousia or power to become God’s sons, not as individuals but as part of the community of believers. Our sonship is demonstrated by the dominion and leading of the Spirit in our lives.
