Got inspired to do a second installment in our new series exploring different years in heavy music history. 1989 is an especially fascinating year, as it presented the sea change from heavy metal hair bands to the still as yet no mainstream thrash and death metal subgenres. At the same time, the seeds of industrial, grunge, and nu-metal were beginning to sprout in the fertile soil of the heavy underground. It's hard to think Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Nine Inch Nails when you think of the 1980s, but there they were (even High on Fire was active, though few, if any, recordings are extant from this early period).
