After serving two years in the Peace Corps in El Salvador, Honda returned to California and embarked on a long career in education before entering public life. He brought a teacher’s perspective to 16 years in Congress, where he became known for his work on education, civil rights, immigration, and the environment, among the myriad of issues he championed. Incarcerated with his Japanese American family during World War II, Honda experienced firsthand a defining chapter in the history of the United States.   Now living on the Oregon Coast, he reflects on his journey, his experiences in public life, and his vision for the future of education in America.

Jon Allan of the U.S. Biosphere Network discusses how Cascade Head fits into a growing network of biosphere regions across the US working together to address today's environmental challenges.

The celebration continued into the evening with live performances by local musicians and a guided night-sky experience led by a local astronomer, bringing the community together under the stars to celebrate the region's natural and cultural heritage, while speculating on our place in the Universe.
