The opioid epidemic gets a lot of press and it should, but there’s a rise in dangerously heavy drinking in the US that isn’t getting any media coverage. Why is this new epidemic hiding in plain sight? Fully 13% of Americans have some kind of alcohol-related disorder, a 50% increase from the previous decade. It’s a huge problem, considering that a half million people suffer injuries from those who are drinking. And that’s not all. About one-third of people indulge in high-risk binge drinking which can cause life-long problems. Women are at the forefront as the rise in binge drinking for us is 58%. Serious health risks such as cancer, heart and liver disease, strokes, and diabetes are associated with drinking. Alcohol-related diseases are costing America $250 billion a year.
