  • The Dr. Vibe Show™: Building A Black Archive

Building A Black Archive (BABA) is a community archive that unearths and documents Contemporary Black Canadian Histories & Experiences as well as histories and experiences within the African Diaspora. BABA's work includes workshops, speaking engagements, community archival work, consultations and an annual artist residency program for Black artists.

BABA was started in 2019 by Alannah Johnson and Jonsaba Jabbi who were connected through a mutual friend and shared many similarities unbeknownst to them. BABA exists in an interesting space in the sense that we are not an institutional archive but we also don't exist within the traditional community archives frame. The best way to describe the type of archiving we do is through the practice of alternative archives using oral histories, memory work and new media technologies as a way to make our archives accessible to members of the Black community.

Since 2019, BABA has hosted three artist residencies which over 15 artists have attended. They have given over 20 workshops and talks on community archives and Black Canadian Cultural Production through Canadian Hip Hop to academic institutions, galleries and others. The themes of the residencies have included: Hip Hop and the Black Experience in Ontario 1980-2010, Mapping Black Geographies in Canada and Archiving Every Day Black Life.

Recently, Jonsaba Jabbi and Alannah Johnson of Building A Black Archive (BABA) were on our show.

During our conversation, Jonsaba and Alannah talked about:

    – Jonsaba and Alannah share a little about themselves – Their experience with Black Canadian history before starting BABA – Their first meeting – The start of BABA – The story behind the name of the organization – BABA's first big win – BABA's first event – Some of BABA's projects so far – BABA's artist residency – Some obstacles/roadblocks in their journey and what they have learned – BABA celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip hop – What are they excited about – How can we help them – Have they approached educational institutions? – Suggestions on helping Black youth

  • The Dr. Vibe Show™: Black Healthcare Professionals Network

The Black Healthcare Professionals Network (BHPN) is a healthcare organization dedicated to advancing the careers of Black Canadian healthcare professionals. Its comprehensive range of services includes networking, career development, and advocacy to enhance diversity and inclusion within the healthcare sector. BHPN also supports aspiring Black healthcare entrepreneurs through tailored business advisory services, strategic networking, and mentorship, contributing to economic growth in the Black community and fostering innovation in healthcare. BHPN is committed to reshaping the Canadian healthcare landscape, fostering greater inclusivity and equity to address the evolving needs of all communities.

On September 7, 2023, BHPN launched the first Black Health Professionals Directory in Ontario.

In addition to the launch of the directory, they are also hosting a panel discussion on September 16, 2023, in Toronto, where experts from diverse health disciplines will discuss entrepreneurship and building businesses with purpose in the Canadian healthcare system.

Black health professionals often have an interest in starting their own business in the medical sector. However, there are unique challenges that they face to getting the businesses up and running and expand. These challenges are not often addressed by the resources available to them. The role of BHPN is to provide free business advisory services, strategic networking and mentorship for them.

Recently, Dr. Nikolai Whyte and Abena Addo, Co-Founders of BHPN were live on our show talking about the first Black Health Professionals Directory in Ontario and the panel discussion on September 16, 2023, in Toronto.

During the conversation, Abena and Nikolai talked about:

    – Abean and Nikolai share some of their background – The start of BPHN and the work it took to get things going – The moment that the organization got approved for funding – The organization's first big win – Getting an advisory board and what makes a good advisory board – What does BPHN do – When it comes to healthcare, what are biggest challenges for Black healthcare professionals and Black Canadians – The BPHN directory – Their big launch event on Saturday, September 16, 2023 and what they want the attendees to leave with – The next thing that the organization is working on after the September 16, 2023 event

Abena Addo, is a Co-Founder of BHPN, an engineer and a passionate entrepreneur. Her experience as an entrepreneur for 10 years combined with her passion for business, community and health and wellness, makes her a driving force behind BHPN's initiatives.

Dr. Nikolai Whyte, MD is a Co-Founder of BHPN and a practicing family doctor specializing in aesthetic and bariatric medicine. Driven by his observations of a lack of Black doctors in Ontario and a need for healthcare professionals to understand business and entrepreneurship, he played a pivotal role in conceiving BHPN. As the Managing Director, Dr. Whyte oversees the organization's operations and guides it towards achieving its goals of increasing the representation of Black healthcare providers and entrepreneurs.

Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company.

As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education.

Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats' Women's Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy.

Ms. Jones is an activist, feminist, and a former collaborator with Paisley Park.

Laura "La La" Key is a powerhouse vocalist, livestreamer and active Real Estate professional. She has managed a major live-streaming App and teaches courses in social media promotion. When she is not busy making joke memes, cussing out politicians or cooking amazing gourmet dishes, she travels the globe recording and performing original music with her artist husband. Most recently the pair traveled to Rio de Janerio, Brazil and Porto, Portugal to perform vocal parts in the studio for their latest album release.

On the September 2, 2023 episode of State Of Things With Aisha, Jill & LaLa, Laura "LaLa" Key talked about:

    – Former US president Donald Trump was arrested in Georgia on racketeering and conspiracy charges and released on a $200,000 bond after having a historic mug shot taken and his meltdown in 31 videos – Mitch McConnell health issues – The state of Texas takes over Houston schools and removes libraries and librarians – Wagner mercenary group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, who was killed in a probable assassination on board his Embraer private jet – The state of customer service
