The Massive Passive hardware EQ is a bit of a legend in the studio world so its not surprising the team at UAD took to modeling this classic bit of kit. But how close did they get to the original? I took a copy of the plugin down to Tim at Fluid Mastering to see how it stacks up vs the real thing.

“I too have an APC40. What I would like to be able to do is have one midi channel assigned as a software synth channel to play live from one midi keyboard (not pre-recorded midi clips as in your video). It would be lovely to assigned the Clip Launch buttons in one column to a variety of software instruments so that one could quickly switch to different sound sources when playing live.”

So I present to you, how to to switch instruments using dummy clips.

The FLUX:: Pure Analyzer System must be one of the most comprehensive real time analysis tools I have ever come across. Add to that its so darn nice to look at you would think you have found the king of RTA right? Well sort of…

After a lot of planing and building the new studio is finally finished and with it comes the launch of my new service DSPmastering

I have been freelance mastering for a few years but havent offered it officially to the DSP audience as I havent been happy hiring or using my previous studio (acoustically unacceptable). Its taken a lot of work to get to the point where I have the right space, tools and experience to do this properly, but here I am and I couldn’t be more proud.

I also would like to thank the guys at Fluid Mastering and Metropolis two of London’s top mastering studios. The experience I gained from these facilites was invaluable.

Just a quick video to let you know where I have been, what I am up to and where we are going.

Its been a crazy 5 year ride living in London and I have met many amazing people who have helped me grow but all good things must come to an end. So after two years of posting an episode every week I am taking a long holiday and traveling through south east Asia for four months before returning home to New Zealand to follow my dreams. Dont worry though The DSP Project will be coming back via New Zealand next year and if you haven’t been following along there are now 85 previous episodes for you to check out. So this last video is just a thank you to some of the people that have helped me and we finally give away the TC Electronic Impact Twin.

 

A huge thank you to all who have watched and supported the show, without you none of this would of been possible. And I look forward to bring you new things in 2012!

My good friend and session drummer Alvaro wanted to talk to me about Ableton and The DSP Project and also suggested recording it. Its a bit of a mixed talk but I thought some of you might find it interesting.

On a side note I am sorry we are behind on our release schedule. A lot has been going on around here with big changes in the works, I will explain all about it in the next episode, where we will also finally give away the Impact Twin.

After the mixing better bass episode I had a few people ask how to get a good sub, so this week I will show you how easy it can be. If you combine this tutorial with the aforementioned episode you will be shaking windows in no time. Although I also touch on the idea that its not always just pure SPL we should be considering when designing the bottom end, just because you might not hear it doesn’t mean you cant FEEL a more interesting texture.

Note we are talking about SUB-bass here (roughly below 80hz) not the more audible (mid) bass at say 80hz – 200hz as such we would expect it to be layered in with with other bass/lead sounds.

Caution: You can have too much of a good thing. Cranking up 30hz so you can feel it on your monitors might seem nice at first but can make your bass sound flabby, unfocused and lacking punch. It will also reduce the perceived loudness achievable.

 

Sub-bass can be one of the hardest elements to mix correctly with out good monitoring and room treatment so I suggest a frequency analyser and headphones to make sure you know whats going on down there.
