In the inaugural episode of The Dubcast with Dubside, listeners are introduced to the remarkable world of traditional Greenland kayaking and the stories that will unfold throughout the series. Dubside shares his vision for the podcast and offers a preview of the people, places, techniques, and traditions that have shaped more than two decades of his travels through the kayaking world.

You’ll hear about legendary paddlers including Derek Hutchinson, Nigel Foster, Maligiaq Padilla, Cheri Perry, Helen Wilson, Greg Stamer, and many others who have helped preserve and advance traditional kayaking. Dubside discusses the Greenland National Kayaking Championships, kayaking events around the world, folding kayaks, Greenland rolling, ropes gymnastics, Greenlandic language and culture, and his passion for documenting every paddling trip in his logbooks.

The episode also features Dubside’s entertaining stories from the East Coast Canoe and Kayak Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, including his first intimidating encounter with Derek Hutchinson and the tale of his famous nighttime rolling demonstration performed with a lit candle and a brick—a crowd favorite that didn’t always go according to plan. Along the way, listeners will gain insight into the evolution of Greenland-style kayaking in North America and the growing appreciation for its techniques and traditions.

Finally, Dubside introduces listeners to the Greenlandic “Qajaq Song,” reflecting on the deep cultural significance of the qajaq in Greenland and the efforts that preserved this ancient tradition into the modern era.
