Long before national rankings, super tournaments and powerhouse programs became the norm, Gary Sorace was helping lay the foundation for modern Ohio wrestling.

A 1970 Ohio State Champion from Maple Heights, Cleveland State wrestler, longtime coach and one of the most influential assistants in St. Edward wrestling history, Sorace joins The Dynasty Effect Podcast to share stories spanning more than five decades in the sport.

Gary explains how a chance meeting with legendary Coach Howard Ferguson changed his life, eventually leading him to help build the early St. Edward dynasty. He reveals how Ferguson spent hours filling legal pads with notes, how the famous technique charts hanging in the St. Edward wrestling room were created, and how the training methods from Maple Heights became the blueprint for one of the greatest programs in America.

The conversation also uncovers Gary's role in creating the original Quad of Champions, an event that helped inspire future national super events like the Ironman Tournament, along with his philosophy of always seeking out the nation's best competition.

Gary opens up about the heartbreaking end to his own college career after learning Cleveland State had failed to file his redshirt paperwork, costing him his final NCAA Tournament opportunity despite a 14-1 season. Instead of walking away from the sport, he poured his passion into coaching and helping build championship programs.

Throughout the episode, Gary shares timeless coaching lessons on motivation, building dynasties, developing athletes instead of chasing rankings, treating every wrestler differently, and why the greatest coaches understand that not every athlete is motivated the same way.

We also dive into:

- Winning a state title at Maple Heights

- Wrestling for Cleveland State under Coach Bonacci

- Working with Howard Ferguson during the birth of the St. Edward dynasty

- The origins of the Quad of Champions

- Coaching at Tri-C and producing 24 All-Americans

- The future of wrestling, RAF and growing the sport

- Lessons learned from 50 years of coaching

- The importance of family, mentorship and leaving a lasting legacy

From Walsh Jesuit to the cockpit to the White House, Brad “Barf” Byers has lived at the highest levels of pressure, performance, and leadership.

A 1997 Ohio State Champion, Ironman Champion, and member of one of the most dominant Walsh Jesuit teams ever, Byers went on to become a 3x NCAA Qualifier and team captain at UNC before earning his wings as a USMC fighter pilot. From there, his path took him into executive leadership, and ultimately into a senior advisory role at the highest levels of government.

From walking into the Walsh room for one season and becoming a national contender, to flying missions where every decision matters, to leading in business and government, Byers breaks down what toughness, leadership, and accountability really mean.
