If Gravity Companies are so important to the economy, why do they receive so little investor attention?

The common explanation is AI. Investor enthusiasm, media coverage, and cultural prestige have shifted toward companies associated with artificial intelligence.

But the story may be deeper than that.

In this episode, I argue that many Gravity Companies are not simply competing with AI for attention. They are being evaluated in a world where the definition of exceptional corporate performance has fundamentally changed.

What are Gravity Companies? These companies are least vulnerable to disruption because of AI. In fact, they are the greatest beneficiaries of the AI era. Yet in an era dominated by AI headlines, many of these businesses have faded from the spotlight. This episode examines which specific categories of companies are most vulnerable to AI disruption, why AI is exceptionally good at compressing abstraction layers, and why some of the most important companies in the economy may also be the most overlooked.This is Episode 2 of The Gravity Companies Series on The Economy Beyond AI. I introduce the distinction between abstraction and consequence, explain why many Gravity Companies may become major beneficiaries of AI rather than its victims, and set up the central question for the next episode: if these companies matter so much, why has attention shifted elsewhere?

The AI frenzy has concentrated investor enthusiasm, media coverage, and cultural prestige around companies perceived to be directly in the AI value chain — chips, cloud infrastructure, LLMs, data centers, and AI-native applications.

In the process, much of the rest of the economy has faded into the background.

How do employees at “non-AI” companies feel while watching the market celebrate a different category of firms? How should leaders of these companies think about motivation, ambition, and relevance in an era where technological excitement has become concentrated in a narrow segment of the economy?

In this three-part series, I will argue that the real economy is still run by what I call Gravity Companies. These are the companies closest to operational complexity, economic accountability, and real-world execution. They move goods, finance systems, power infrastructure, manufacture products, and operate the institutional machinery upon which economies actually function.

Far from being displaced by AI, many gravity companies stand to benefit enormously from it.

This series will explore three questions:

· And how can their leaders reposition their companies?
