The Educated Hunter

Ben Tumata is a passionate recreational hunter, that without intention found himself the creator of BGHNZ, a facebook page that was one of the leaders in the social game for hunting. This page shared the NZ way of hunting life and soon found itself in front of eighty-plus thousand viewers from around the world. These days Ben fills his time guiding free range hunts, specializing in genuine stags from the Southern Alps of New Zealand and family. Ben is an entrepreneur at heart, so it was only natural there was going to be another direction, and there is; MIA tents. New Zealand’s original tent with fireplace capability, giving comfort to those brave enough to venture into the New Zealand backcountry.

New Zealand's hunting culture to the world. We have a good discussion about free-range guiding, in particular, the Stags of the Southern Alps. Ben has recently returned from a trip to the USA chasing Elk, so we hear all about this adventure and the learning Ben took from this hunt.

Kuran catches up with Joseph Peter from Hard Yards Hunting to debrief the impacts felt post the Tahr cull. We look at the work our foundations are doing to bring the government to point on all actions, what the result so of the cull has been so far, and what recreational hunters need to do going forward; to ensure there is a sustainable Tahr herd for hunting in future generations.

Kuran catches up with Rob Wilson, the founder, and CEO of Hunters Element. They have an in-depth discussion on product design and testing. Rob and his company have made a conscious decision to ensure throughout their design, manufacturing and distribution stages they do all they can to minimize negative impacts to the environment, they have made big changes to recyclable materials, reusable and compostable materials, made deliberate decisions to not use harmful chemicals and ensure animal welfare is upheld at all times. This social decision is commendable as it has meant increased time and costs, but has also united the entire team, this ensures a better product for the buyers.
