The effects of chronic stress and abuse

Listen Later

In Season 2, episode 34, Lauren gave examples of emotional abuse and briefly described the effects. Today she delves deeper into the effects of all types of abuse and chronic stress on children.

She covers the variety of behaviors that a child has been, or is, abused or suffering chronic stress and why that behavior may be exhibited.

  • Rage
  • Flashbacks
  • Low self-esteem, low-confidence, and a lack of bodily control
  • Perfectionism
  • Unrealistic guilt
  • Self-harm
  • Eating disorders

Lauren also discusses isolation punishment and its effect on the brain. Isolation punishment is a punishment that separates a person from the group, for example, time outs or in-school suspension.

Post-pandemic chronic stress and abuse in children is a problem that is raising our rates of childhood anxiety. We have to combat this so children can learn and thrive, for any parent or teacher trying to understand their child post-pandemic, this episode is critical.

Lauren answers this week’s listener question during the episode:  What do I do with a child who is mouthy or uses foul language?
