The Enigma Of The Mary Celeste Unsolved Mystery

Listen Later

The enigma of Mary celeste is one of the most famous maritime mysteries in history. It is an American merchant ship that was found on December 4, 1872 in the Atlantic, near the Azores, drifting and completely abandoned, but in good condition and with all its belongings intact.
Key facts of the mystery:
Name of the boat: Mary celeste
Sailed: 7 November 1872, from New York to Genoa (Italy)
Crew: 10 people, including captain Benjamin briggs, his wife and young daughter
It was found by: the ship dei gratia, a British ship that had left shortly after
What they found:
The ship was intact and still navigable.
I had food and water for several months.
Personal belongings were in place.
The only lifeboat had disappeared.
The logbook contained nothing unusual.
There were no signs of fighting, theft or violence.
Main theories (none confirmed):
Alcohol explosion: the shipment included industrial alcohol; Some believe that vapors may have caused an explosion without fire, scaring the crew.
Mutiny: although there is no clear evidence.
Pirates or maritime attack: unlikely, as there was no shortage of valuables.
Ill-calculated voluntary abandonment: they could believe that the ship was going to sink after a technical problem (for example, a broken water pump) and they got down to the lifeboat, but then died at sea.
Supernatural phenomena: ufos, sea monsters, Bermuda triangle (although it was not in that area), etc. These ideas are popular but without real basis.
Current state of the mystery:
To this day, the case remains officially unresolved, and the Mary celeste has become an icon of naval mystery, fueling books, movies, and conspiracy theories for generations.
