😍 Offering simple choices to young children - why and how 🎈

In this Top Tip Tuesday we looked at the basics of offering simple choices to our young children.

The Why:
1) to show respect to our child
2) to support their development of agency and self-direction
3) to ease power struggles

How:
1) Freedom of choice primarily comes from the immediate environment, arrange things for your child in a simple, ordered and accessible way.
2) offer a handful of simple choices every day (clothing, food etc)
3) when offering a choice ensure it is a genuine choice whereby you are happy with either outcome.
4) the choice should be between two options, a young child cannot cope with multiple choices.

We went pretty deep into why it is so important to offer choices , and I went off on a tangent about how we can contribute to a more peaceful and harmonious world through being aware of our needs and preferences and being able to express them.

Sid is a former Montessori Educator and Teacher Trainer, and is a guest lecturer at Middlesex University. Founder of The Male Montessorian themalemontessorian.com and Montistory @montistory101 platforms; he is currently doing his doctorate at Middlesex University.
In this work he is investigating how a gendered workforce materialises in Montessori spaces by putting feminist ‘new’ materialisms in conversation with postcolonial, decolonial theories and lesser known subaltern studies such as Dalit feminisms and Adivasi feminisms.

Today I welcome Prudence Ochuko Daniels, Founder of @momahillschool in Lagos, Nigeria and passionate advocate for Montessori in Africa. A dynamic entrepreneur and early childhood practitioner with a background in life science, design, and entrepreneurship, Prudence. is a credentialed Montessori Casa guide and is also trained in Infant/Toddler and Elementary levels. She is the founder of Momahill Montessori school, an authentic Montessori 0-12 years program in Lagos, Nigeria. Passionate about child development and entrepreneurship, Prudence is the promoter of D' Parent's Prerogative platform, a group that helps parents navigate the parenting life using Montessori ideas. She believes strongly in education as a tool for national development, and as such promotes women and youth entrepreneurship in her country through her RYE² Initiative where she and her team voluntarily trained over 2000 youths in 2017 under the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
She serves as a volunteer business mentor with three non- profit organisations within Africa. She is a member of the organising team for the Montessori Everywhere (https://montessorieverywhere.org) global movement and also doubles as one of the African Continent correspondent for this movement. Welcome to ‘The Montessori Mission’ Podcast, today I talk to Tatenda Blessing Muchiriri, Member Board Of Directors at Moon & Stars Foundation.
Hosted by myself, Charlotte Awdry, my mission is to show 10 different voices, perspectives and aspects of Montessori around the world, and the richness it brings in diverse Communities.

Born in Zimbabwe, Tatenda discovered Montessori by chance whilst traveling in Beijing, China. His love of Montessori led him to study and become certified in Montessori from birth to six years old at the American Montessori Society (AMS).

He also has an undergrad in Liberal Arts and is pursuing a Masters in International Education Administration. Tatenda was privileged to be part of the AMS Emerging Leaders Fellowship 2018, Moonshot EdVentures 2020 and the Interative Space Fellowship 2021 and currently serves as a board member for Colorado Montessori Association and Moon and Stars Association. He is also a regular guest speaker for the Montessori Education center of the Rockies and City Garden Montessori Institute. Tatenda is a proud Afro Montessori advocate and a lifelong learner in Afro-indigenous educational pedagogies. Follow Tatenda on @montessorilens and his innovative social justice project @montessorionwheels creating a Montessori classroom in a former school bus and taking this to underserved communities in Colorado.💞

Pilar Bewley is a mompreneur, homeschool mentor, and Montessori advocate. She was born in Mexico, and spent her childhood traveling between Mexico and the United States. She holds AMI certifications for ages 3-12, a Master’s degree in Montessori education, Positive Discipline parent and classroom certifications, and the Orff Schulwerk I diploma.

What does it mean for me to allow my child to expand? What does it mean for me to allow my child to be in their fullness?

I had so many beautiful messages about my journal prompt last week regarding expanding our children, so in this Live I talked through 10 ways that we can expand our child, supporting them in becoming the fullness of all they can be.

We also talked about expanding our hearts as adults, and practising radical self-compassion.

These topics go deep into our introspection of what it means to follow our child, to support them in fulfilling their potential, allowing them to unfold into all that they can be. And to support ourselves unconditionally as well .😍
