If and when we make contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence, the first impression we make will determine the fate of our species. We are prone to fear and aggression. An AI envoy, however, would be the pinnacle of our logic. It could learn an alien language in seconds, remain perfectly calm, and represent the best of Earth's intellect without the baggage of our biology. The risk is philosophical: If we send an AI, we are not introducing ourselves. We are introducing our tools. If the aliens judge us based on the AI, they are judging a sanitized mask, not the messy biological reality of humanity. We might be safer, but we would be starting our relationship with the cosmos based on a lie about what we are.
