The Epidemic of Instant Gratification

Listen Later

Instant (or immediate) gratification refers to the temptation (and subsequent tendency) to forego a future benefit in exchange for a less gratifying but more immediate benefit. This is worthy of consideration because many of the activities that promote instant gratification are linked to unhealthy behaviours. Over time, the ability to quickly satisfy a desire for low-quality, disease-inducing foods takes a real toll on our bodies. The unrestrained purchasing of whatever online good piques our interest creates a major burden on our credit card statement, and our constant drive to check in on social media, even while spending time with friends and family, lowers the quality of our in-person interactions.

The studies have shown that if you want to succeed at something, at some point you will need to find the ability to be disciplined and take action instead of becoming distracted and doing what's easy. Success in nearly every field requires you to ignore doing something easier (delaying gratification) in favour of doing something harder.

I have shared a few tips I found online on how to delay gratification.
