Flopcast episode 642! Dragon Con is just days away, which means tens of thousands of nerds shall soon descend upon the unsuspecting city of Atlanta. (Actually, Atlanta knows we’re coming. They’re jacking up the price of giant rum drinks at this very moment…) Kevin and the Mayor of Chickentown will be busy with panels, presentations, and various bizarre Dragon Con events, so this week we’re sharing our schedule with you. Including: Panels on Aquaman, Batman, What If…?, and Freaks and Geeks! The Sci-Fi Music Video Book Club! The return of Sci-Fi Court! A couple of Roll-A-Panels! A not-at-all-silly script reading of a Three’s Company episode! The Geek Girls Run! Apes! (So many apes…) And lots more weird stuff, of course. Find us there! We’ll have shiny badge ribbons for you. And we’ll file our full Dragon Con report here in a couple of weeks, assuming we’re not trampled by an inflatable T-rex mob.

Jim reflects on his first time watching James Cameron’s 1984 Sci-Fi Classic “The Terminator,” starring Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn, Arnold Schwartznegger, Earl Boen, Paul Winfield, and Lance Henriksen. A killer cyborg is sent from the future to kill the mother of a future revolutionary. This classic spawned several sequels and was one of the top grossing films of the year. Indiana Jones has returned in a fifth installment of the titular franchise. In this episode we talk about the Dial of Destiny. We discuss revitalizing the franchise in the 21st century and how it compares to the prior attempt. We debate the Indiana Jones franchise’s potential for a continuation with other characters or a reboot. We also get into Nazi villains, use of historical set pieces, artefacts, and why Sallah is the bellwether for whether an Indiana Jones film will be good or not.
Due to time constraints there is no five-minute controversy this week.
This week Ryan, Nate, and Mark join the cast.
Show Notes:
Mark’s mental diagram of how Raiders of the Lost Ark influenced him.

Star Trek has a long history of drawing inspiration from novels, other television shows, and especially movies! This week we’re going to be delving into some of the Trekisodes (yes, that’s a word now, I just coined it) that were inspired by films of all genres — sci-fi, horror, mysteries, westerns, etc.

Advice for aspiring writers! Do you want to write a book, a series of books, or some poetry? Do you need some motivation to get started? If you answered yes, or even maybe, to any of these questions, this is the episode for you. And if you answered no, listen anyway. You will always learn something new on the Soul Forge Podcast!
For this episode, we dive deep into the back catalogue. This episode originally aired in the Spring of 2018 as episode 37. There are some great timey-whimey throwbacks as this was recorded 6 years ago. I believe this was the first conversation I ever had with Daniel Peter Hitch. Since that time, he has become my friend and co-host on two other podcasts.
To start with, we begin with a bit of background on Dan’s early influences. Every writer begins by falling in love with the works of another author. This brings the conversation to the topic of the motivation and desire to write. We learn what makes Dan tick. But of course, monotony and distraction are the writer’s enemy. How does one combat these foes? Routine is the key! Dan has advice for aspiring writers.
Later we learn about Dan’s inspirations. Who or what are Bubbles the Pirate? How many books has Dan written? We end the show with some advice for aspiring writers. Find Dan on Instagram: @daniel_hitch_writer

Flopcast episode 641! Dragon Con, our favorite gigantic nerdfest of the year, is just a couple of weeks away, and we’re already exhausted. Today we’re looking at Dragon Con’s guest list of TV and movie stars, writers, artists, musicians, scientists, podcasters, puppeteers, and miscellaneous weirdos. Including: A trio of Lord of the Rings hobbits, a Monty Python guy, a Robot Chicken guy, a bunch of Fraggles, a bunch of Star Trek actors (including a certain bearded Commander whose birthday we’re celebrating), a flute-playing astronaut, Canadian teen pop star Robin Sparkles, and more. We’re also thrilled to announce the release of Dragon Tales, a collection of stories and essays all about Dragon Con. (There’s even a contribution from Kevin, and believe it or not, it’s completely ridiculous.) This is a super-fun book, and all the proceeds go to charity, so we hope you’ll pop over to Amazon and order a copy right now. Next week: The dragon talk continues, and it just keeps getting weirder.
