Bridgerton, Bacon, The Boys and More!
Food, History, television shows, work, feedback and more on this week’s episode. No topic is too obscure for us to cover!
The weather is our first mini topic. A veritable heat wave has descended upon us. From hail to humidity, no one is safe from these extremes. Some days it feels as though we are sitting here melting.
We had our yard sale this last weekend. Turns out we prefer going to sales, rather than hosting them. There is a lot of prep work involved. Pricing items is quite important, and having an organizational system is key. Item placement will affect your sales. Keeping your items in line of sight is crucial.
Leah goes to a work leadership conference this week. She and her co-workers will exchange ideas, and talk about having difficult conversations. There will be skills fair full of differing booths. This is one of the very few times where Shawn and Leah have been apart for a few days.
Richard from Australia provides feedback on our restaurant review episode. This leads to a discussion about The Blockhouse, an eatery in the old St. Mary’s Paper building. We then discuss the historic Canal District, the Soo Locks and the Agawa Train tour. Bridgerton, Bacon, The Boys and More!
Our episode ends with a chat about some recent television we have been enjoying. Season three of Bridgerton was a particular delight. The Boys, The Acolyte and The Big Bang Theory are in regular rotation. There is some chatter about sequel series such at Crusade, Star Trek, Young Sheldon, and the Mandolorian.

In this very special anniversary episode of MONSTER ATTACK!, Jim reflects on the first time he saw Ken Russell’s classic 1980 Sci-Fi film “Altered States,” written by Paddy Chayefsky and starring William Hurt, Blair Brown, Charles Haid, Bob Balaban, Thaao Penghlis, Dori Brenner, Charles White eagle, Drew Barrymore, Megan Jeffers, Jack Murdock, John Larroquette, and George Gaynes. Russell’s surrealistic look at a man’s obsession with finding answers to the meaning of life developed a large cult following during the last 40+ years. Flopcast episode 632! The struggle continues, as we’re still trying to guess each other’s favorite songs from the Just Can’t Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80s CD series. By 1983, the radio was bursting with new wave weirdos who never would have dented the Top 40 in the pre-MTV era. But suddenly acts like Madness, Nena, and Taco (TACO!) were scoring huge oddball hits. Culture Club was peaking, while Tears For Fears was just getting started. Spandau Ballet delivered a new romantic classic. Big Country turned their guitars into bagpipes. And even a young Tracey Ullman tossed off a gorgeous throwback pop single. Meanwhile some truly goofy (but still super-fun) acts kept a safe distance from mainstream success. (Casey Kasem never had to introduce “Earthquake Song” by Little Girls.) Let’s sort it all out and try to score a few more points in this penultimate edition of our silly New Wave Game. Also: A visit to the ukulele festival with the Unlikely Strummers, the Somerville Ukulele Club, and a thousand more ukulele-wielding humans; Lindsay Wagner’s bionic birthday; Kevin’s parentheses; Kornflake’s “eep” words; and Joe’s (possibly successful) attempt to swoop in and win the whole game.

Taking care of dad for our Father’s Day episode!
We start this episode with a brief history of how Father’s Day began. Did you know this holiday is not much older than a century? In fact, Father’s Day was introduced in 1910. Naturally, it was a response to Mother’s Day and soon became associated with retail and commerce. Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, usually gets the credit for originating Father’s Day. She is said to have had the idea in 1909 while listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, which was emerging as a holiday. You will learn even more in this episode.
Shawn and Leah discuss their fathers. They each have dads, fathers-in-law, as well as stepfathers. Shawn talks about being a father and a step-father. An important aspect of this discussion is their feelings towards these dads. What happened to the step-dads in their lives?
Taking care of dad is a major part of the episode. Both Shawn and Leah’s fathers are in their 70s. Age brings many things with it, including loss of ability, forgetfulness and wounded pride. Imparting their wisdom also becomes important as dads age. Shawn must help his dad do the things he once took for granted. Leah is helping her father move closer to his wife.
Pop Culture and Dads!
No one wants your stuff! When a dad passes on, what happens to their things? A brief discussion on what to do with all the stuff left behind. Who wants what, and where does it go? Taking care of dad can definitely be a challenge, but there are also many rewards.

Flopcast episode 630! Another quick fill-in show? You bet! We’re flipping through three old comic books that the Mayor of Chickentown actually owned as a little kid, decades before her rise to poultry-themed political bigwig. Up first is The Wizard of Oz, a giant-sized movie adaptation that was actually the first collaboration between Marvel and DC! (Only a flying monkey could bring these rival publishers together.) We also have an issue of Spidey Super Stories, which was published in conjunction with Spider-Man’s segments on The Electric Company. And we even have a Casper the Friendly Ghost comic with a creepy Eddie Munster-type demon child on the cover. Plus: Spider-Man goes to the mall! Richie Rich dies! Morgan Freeman as Easy Reader! Irene Cara and Short Circus! Wendy and Spooky! Sad Sack selling Hostess Cupcakes! And more comic book ads for Grit, onion gum, Witchiepoo masks, and The Bad News Bears! Is this whole episode a sneaky backdoor pilot for a Flopcast spinoff show? Perhaps…
