Flopcast episode 592! We have apparently survived Dragon Con 2023, and it’s gonna take THREE episodes to review everything that happened at our favorite annual gathering of 70,000 nerds and/or geeks. This week we’re just covering Wednesday through Friday, including: The amazing costumes of Brandon the Shapeshifter, the muscovy ducks of Piedmont Park, the Dragon Con Newbie Walking Tours, Kate from Strange Animals Podcast, Chris from Sci-Fi Explosion, Kevin from Gleaming the Tube, a tribute to MTV 120 Minutes, the Geek Girls Run, the legendary Marty Krofft (and HR Pufnstuf!), a Twilight Zone “Eye of the Beholder” deep dive with the American Sci Fi Classics Track, weird music video fun with the Jonzun Crew, and much more. We’ll try to make you feel as dizzy and confused as if you were really there. Plus: Wherever we go, whatever we do, we will be right here waiting for Kornflake’s National Whatever Day. Next week: Dragon Con review continues. And it’s a safe bet that things will just keep getting weirder.

Jim discusses a classic 1973 horror film based on a book written by Richard Matheson – “The Legend Of Hell House,” starring Roddy McDowall, Pamela Franklin, Clie Revill, Gayle Hunnicutt, Peter Bowles and Roland Culver. Four people are given a week to solve the mystery of “Hell House,” which resulted in the massacre of eight paranormal investigators 20 years earlier. HIP-HOP

WE’RE BACK! After a week off for Dragon Con (which Alan and Rob were attending), the Modern Musicology team is back with a new episode celebrating the 50th anniversary of the birth of HIP-HOP! 50 years ago, Cindy Campbell threw a party in the rec room of her family’s Bronx apartment building at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue and charged admission (.25 for ladies, 50 for fellas) to raise money to buy back-to-school clothes, and she asked her older brother Clive (later known as Kool Herc) to DJ. Using two turntables and a stack of classic soul and funk records, he and his buddy Coke la Rock shouted out spontaneous rhymes over the instrumental breaks. And with that, a new phenomenon was born.

We talk about our own journeys with rap and hip-hop, our first exposures to it, some of the standout acts that we love, favorite albums, and a lot more.

Want to share your favorite hip-hop artist, album, song, or moment? We’d love to hear about it! Drop us a line at [email protected] or leave a comment wherever you find our episode and let us know! And don’t forget to rate us on your favorite podcast app!

Flopcast episode 591! It’s Dragon Con week! Alas, Kornflake cannot join us at Dragon Con, but let’s just pretend that she can! Kevin has prepared a hypothetical weekend of silly events for Kornflake, based on the actual Dragon Con schedule. Including: robot battles, coloring books and coffee, burlesque, the old Krofft theme park, a tea party for puppets, and more. Plus: It’s National Star Trek Day! (Hey, maybe we can just beam Kornflake to Atlanta.) Next week: Our actual review of Dragon Con. Assuming there are any survivors.

The adventure challenge brings couples closer together. Shawn and Leah just celebrated their birthdays and the adventures are just beginning!

Episode 300 is a huge milestone in podcasting. On this episode, Shawn and Leah talk about travel, growing closer and buying some cool stuff. Leah tells Shawn that since they became a couple, she has listened to many Soul Forge episodes. She has learned a lot of things that she would not have thought to ask. Although Shawn’s brother said he should scrap the podcast and delete all the episodes, no harm has come to him from keeping the show going!

Birthdays can be great fun. While preparing for a weekend adventure, Shawn went to Dollarama to get snacks. While checking the pegs for Hot Wheels, he found his first Super Treasure Hunt. These are elusive special editions. This leads to a discussion on northern Ontario and the low stock at most stores. There are few decent buying options in the area.

What were the birthday gifts? Leah got a couple of Funko Pops featuring Walt Disney from Shawn. She also received a Tanzanite pendant. Shawn got a Star Trek Hallmark ornament. He also got the Adventure Challenge Couple’s Edition book set. 50 Scratch-Off Adventures! There are 50 challenges that range from $0-$50, but they can all be modified to fit within your budget.

Finally, it’s all about Disney and Orlando. Leah got herself the LEGO Disney Camera. 811 pieces of fun. That is just the icing on the cake. In the coming week, Shawn and Leah are going to Disney in Florida. They are looking forward to getting away as a couple. They will meet up with Jarman and his wife. Jarman is the narrator of the Soul Forge introduction.

Leah is a travel agent. You can book her services at www.freetotravel.centreholidays.com
