  • The Visitor – Soul Forge Podcast 287

The Visitor is one of the best episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This podcast episode has absolutely nothing to do with that. Although, there will be some Star Trek talk during the course of this show!

Last week I was on holidays from my work life. So, what did I do with that time off? I went for a visit to my old stomping grounds of Timmins, Ontario. I lived there for 19 years, but moved home to Sault Ste. Marie a year ago. Hence, I was the visitor to Timmins! The drive up was uneventful. I saw two moose on the side of the highway. Rarely do I see anything other than birds.

I stayed at a piece of property I own. That property is now up for sale. I decided that since I am never moving back, and Dakota has left the country, that there is no longer a need to keep the place. As an update, Dakota (my step-daughter) is still in Milwaukee. She and Luke are deciding what to do with the 30 day extension the border patrol gave them.

During one of my days I visited with my old work crew. They were happy and excited to see me, and asked so many questions. I also went to Timmins ComicCon. I saw so many old faces. Everywhere I went I felt like a celebrity. So many hugs and handshakes and smiles. I wasn’t depressed at all being in Timmins. Visiting my son and my friends was a great experience.

Star Trek Picard aired its 9th episode of the final season on Thursday. I wasn’t able to see it until Friday. Somehow I managed to avoid spoilers. On the way home I went to Sudbury to visit my friend Cory. I found no Hot Wheels on my journey, but I did manage to get a good one once I was back home.

  • Flopcast 571: The Super Dictionary – From A to Chicken

Flopcast episode 571! 1978’s The Super Dictionary attempted to teach kids vocabulary using DC Comics superheroes. We don’t know if it succeeded as a learning tool, but it sure succeeded in being super weird. (If you’ve ever seen that silly image of Lex Luthor stealing forty cakes, it comes from this very book.) This week we’re examining a few Super Dictionary entries, which involve Wonder Woman sneezing, a banana for Aquaman, Robin chasing “the bad women” on bicycles, Superman trapped in a “soapy water ball,” Supergirl as a centipede, Hawkgirl dancing on the ceiling like Lionel, and much more. We had to stop at “chicken,” because we just couldn’t take it anymore, but perhaps we’ll revisit this bizarro book someday. Meanwhile, Happy Birthday to Conan O’Brien, whose podcast is way more popular than ours. Possibly because he doesn’t just read from a dictionary.

  • Modern Musicology #65 – The Albums of 1978

    The Albums of 1978

The musical archaeologists of Modern Musicology are on an expedition to uncover albums that are celebrating 45th Anniversaries — The Albums of 1978! It was a great year with amazing game-changing debuts from Prince, Van Halen, The Police, The Cars, Kate Bush, Generation X, Devo, and many more. It was a big year for Disco and Funk. Two metal and hard rock institutions (Rainbow and Black Sabbath) both faced crossroads in their career. It was a huge year for Casablanca Records, with major releases from KISS, Donna Summer, Parliament, The Village People, and others (anyone remember Teri DeSario??). Plus, we cover amazing releases by The Ramones, The Clash, XTC, Heart, Blondie, and many more. And we just couldn’t let 1978 go by without dropping the needle on that ill-fated Sgt Pepper film and soundtrack!

What are your memories of 1978? What are your favorite singles or albums from that amazing year? Let us know! Drop us a line at [email protected] or leave a comment wherever you find our episode! And don’t forget to rate us on your favorite podcast app!
