  • Mint versus Loose – Soul Forge Podcast 283

Mint versus loose. Which is better? How do you choose to present your collection? Is there really that much of a difference between mint and loose collecting? All that and more on this week’s exciting episode of The Soul Forge Podcast!

But first, an update on my Hot Wheels collecting. I have been steadily on the hunt for new and unique die cast cars. YouTube has been a great source of information. People have different tastes in vehicles. It seems as though many collectors do not like the fantasy casts. Instead they prefer to only collect real-world models. This hobby can make one quite obsessive.

So, mint or loose? What terms do we need to be familiar with?

MOC : Mint on cardMIB : Mint in boxMIP : Mint in package

HTF : Hard to findVHTF : Very hard to find

Carded : Figure is still on original backing card.Boxed : Figure is still in original box.Loose : Figure is no longer in it’s original box or card.Complete : Figure has all of its original accessories.Punched : The hole used to hang the card on a peg in stores has been knocked out.Unpunched : The hole used to hang the card on a peg in stores has not been knocked out.

There can be many reasons for why someone will keep their action figures MIB/MOC. Some people just like the way the packages look. Many action figures made today are highly detailed, but also are in detailed packages. Others like to keep them MIB/MOC because action figures are worth way more when they are in original packages. The better the condition of the packages, the better the price will be if you ever decide to resell your action figures.

Loose figures will allow you to take them out of the package and “play” with them. You can put your figures in different poses and post them online on blogs or forums. They take up way less storage space. The downside to loose figures is that they lose their values very fast.

The best option (if you can afford it) is to buy 2 of everything. This way, you can display your collection both way and never have to decide!

  • The 42cast Episode 178: Going for the Cat Trick

Black Panther was a tremendously successful film. Showcasing Afro-futurism within the MCU it became a cultural touchstone for people of African descent and those who weren’t, allowing them to bond over their shared delight at this fresh take on a superhero story. In this episode we talk about the sequel to Black Panther, Wakanda Forever. We touch on the tragedy of Chadwick Boseman’s passing and debate whether they made the right choice not to recast the role. We discuss the new characters introduced, how well they serve the plot, and where we think that we’ll see them in the future. We also talk about links to other franchises, the stellar performances, and that surprise end reveal.

Due to time constraints there is no five-minute controversy this week.

This week Anji, Tom, and J.D. join the cast.

  • Modern Musicology #61 – Gary Clark Interview

This week we’re excited to welcome Gary Clark to the show! Gary began his career in the late 80s as frontperson of the Scottish band Danny Wilson, writing and singing the band’s 1987 international hit “Mary’s Prayer.” Throughout the 90s and 2000s, he recorded one solo album and two albums as a member of King L and Transister, while also songwriting and producing for many other artists, including Natalie Imbruglia, Liz Phair, Lloyd Cole, Mel C, The Veronicas, McFly, The Wanted, Demi Lovato, and many more.

In 2016 he wrote or co-wrote the original songs for John Carney’s film Sing Street. His song “Drive it Like You Stole It” has won multiple awards and just placed at #11 in Rolling Stone Magazine‘s Best Songs by Fake Artists list. He’s also won multiple songwriting awards, and his songs have appeared in a wide variety of TV shows and movies like There’s Something About Mary, Charlie’s Angels, Grey’s Anatomy, Teen Wolf, and Pretty Little Liars. He also was executive music producer / composer on two seasons of Amazon’s Modern Love. He subsecquently teamed up again with John Carney to create the songs and score for Carney’s latest movie Flora and Son, which previewed at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival to rapturous reviews. He’s also currently the composer and co-lyricist of the forthcoming Nanny McPhee musical with Dame Emma Thompson.

We hope you enjoyed this discussion with Gary Clark! Let us know! Drop us a line at [email protected] or leave a comment wherever you find our episode! And don’t forget to rate us on your favorite podcast app!

  • Flopcast 567: I Know Where You Stuff Things

Flopcast episode 567! It’s about time for another Dynamite magazine review, but to mix things up, we’re looking at a different (but eerily similar) magazine called Winner. A single issue of Winner was sold through school book clubs in 1982, and it’s essentially a sports-themed version of Dynamite. Our discussion includes: John McEnroe’s hair; Chris Evert on SNL; KangaROOS, the sneakers with pockets; how Kevin learned to juggle Spam; Larry Bird vs Dr. J vs Mike Brady; an ice skating lesson from Linda Fratianne; the longest baseball game in history (yes, it happened in Rhode Island); a wedding on rollerskates; the shockingly high cost of a keyboard for your Intellivision; and why sad kids have the best posters. Also: It’s National Puppy Day, so you might as well send all your dogs to go live with Kornflake.
