Expectation vs reality is episode 281 of Soul Forge Podcast.

Expectations are what we think will happen, while reality is what actually transpires. While we hope these two will match up, they often don’t. This disparity of expectations vs. reality can often lead to feelings of discontentment and unhappiness.

Expectations refer to the beliefs that you hold about the outcomes of events. While these expectations can play an important role in determining what happens and can contribute to goal-directed behavior, they can also lead to disappointment when reality does not match up to what you had hoped would happen.

People are surprisingly bad at predicting what will make them happy. This means that your expectations might cause you to think that achieving certain goals will bring joy and contentment. Because these predictions are often wrong, you might pursue the wrong goals.

Your expectations can get the better of you when you expect more than what is realistic in a given situation. You might expect your partner to live up to what you see in romance films. You may expect your job to be an idealized version you dreamed about as a child, or even your life to match what you see on Instagram.

Expectations can create significant stress when they don’t match up with reality. Also, consider how social media can greatly contribute to this. You compare our own worst moments (those not deemed to be shareable online) to others’ best moments, which very often are filtered to seem perfect.

When you find that what is happening is not what you expected, actively look for the positives in what you have. You may find that once you get over the disappointment, you have something you didn’t initially realize you wanted. This helps you to be more appreciative of what you have. Always be aware of expectation vs reality.

Flopcast episode 565! The Flopcast Book Club is finally back in session, and we’re discussing Bill Mumy’s new memoir Danger, Will Robinson: The Full Mumy. Best known for Lost in Space and The Twilight Zone, Bill was one of the busiest child actors of the 1960s, and has stayed busy with television, film, and music projects ever since. We cover Bill’s Disney movies co-starring seals and raccoons; his experiences on The Munsters and Bewitched; his adventures with Shaun Cassidy, Rick Springfield, and “Weird Al” Yankovic; his comic book band Seduction of the Innocent; his new supergroup Action Skulls; and most importantly, his Pez collection. And don’t forget Bill’s other band Barnes & Barnes, whose classic novelty song “Fish Heads” somehow led to a year’s supply of iced coffee for Kornflake. (RIP Robert Haimer, the other half of Barnes & Barnes, and thanks for the decades of weird music. Yeah.) So stay out of the cornfield and check out the book. We recommend reading it while a big goofy robot screams at you.

80s Metal!

Get out your Spandex, your hair spray, and your earplugs! Hear stories about the early successes like Van Halen and Quiet Riot that paved the way for the metal wave; bands that made it big from the Sunset Strip scene, like Motley Crue, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Winger, Ratt and WASP; some of the bands that were active on the scene that never quite broke big, and even some of the older bands like KISS, Ozzy and Alice Cooper who were inspirations for these younger bands but now had to compete with them for album sales and concert audiences.

Pick up a copy of the book by Tom Beaujour and Richard Bienstock HERE.
