Marvel has generated a lot of buzz lately with announcements regarding the upcoming phases of their universe. This week we discuss the announcements from the SDCC and D23 2022. We’ll talk about our favorite announcements. We discuss the things that surprise us. We’ll opine on the direction that the MCU seems to be going and how we feel about it.

Due to time constraints there is no five-minute controversy this week.

This week Mark, Alli, Wil, and Stephen join the cast.

As is tradition around here, we’re taking a bunch of those Hallmark-style made-for-TV holiday movies, and we’re fixing them. Over 150 goofy new holiday movies are debuting this year, and they’re all the same: random big city career women are returning to their hometowns to save their grandfathers’ stuggling figgy pudding shops while also falling in love with flannel-shirted dudes who run kitten orphanages. Our plan is to randomly insert some weird new element to each movie, thus creating an instant holiday classic. Can these movies be redeemed by adding stuff like roller disco, giant starfish, or actors from Happy Days? We think you know the answer. Hang on, kids, we’re gonna save Christmas.

This week the Modern Musicology crew ignores what’s good for society and celebrates banned songs! These are the tunes that are too sexual, too controversial, too inflammatory or too revolutionary to be heard on the radio or anywhere else! These subversive tracks include obvious and important things like “Fuck the Police” by NWA and “Cop Killer” by Body Count, but also things that seem incredibly innocuous now, like “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and “Physical” by Olivia Newton-John. Find out what some of our favorites are!

How to be thankful is a vital skill in society. There are so many ways in which to present yourself in the world. Being polite and grateful will allow you to get ahead. Not everyone has the skills or the resources or even the desire to show thankfulness. Those that do have the knowledge and the willingness are well set for success.

Practicing gratitude can be a game-changer. It has far reaching effects, from improving our mental health to boosting our relationships with others. Living your life with gratitude helps you notice the little wins—like the bus showing up right on time, a stranger holding the door for you, or the sun shining through your window when you wake up in the morning. Each of these small moments strings together to create a web of well-being that, over time, strengthens your ability to notice the good.

Building your capacity for gratitude isn’t difficult. It just takes practice. The more you can bring your attention to that which you feel grateful for, the more you’ll notice to feel grateful for! Most of us know it’s important to express thanks to the people who help us, or silently acknowledge the things we are grateful for in life. Research has linked gratitude with a wide range of benefits. These include strengthening your immune system and improving sleep patterns. But also feeling optimistic and experiencing more joy and pleasure. As well as being more helpful and generous, and feeling less lonely and isolated. Learn how to be thankful and life will greatly improve.
