It’s been a week of unexpected losses, spooky-season conversations, and some very different opinions about movies!

We start this episode remembering three familiar faces from the entertainment world. Tom Skerritt, Walter Koenig and, most heartbreakingly, Sir Patrick Stewart. For Shawn, the loss of Captain Jean-Luc Picard hits particularly hard. Picard was practically a TV dad growing up, and this one hurts. We also look back at the passing of Leonard Nimoy and the impact these Star Trek legends have had on generations of fans.

With Halloween just around the corner, we discuss whether Shawn should go trick-or-treating or stay home and hand out candy. Leah also gives us a quick update on putting her bees away for the winter.

We turn our attention to the recent municipal elections and talk about why participating in our communities and exercising our right to vote matters.

After the break, it’s movie-review time!

First up is The Deer Hunter (1978). Shawn finally shares his thoughts on this acclaimed classic. Let’s just say he wasn’t impressed.

Next, we switch gears with MayDay, starring Ryan Reynolds on Apple TV. This one gets a much more enthusiastic review!

And because it’s spooky season, we wrap up our movie discussions with George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Shawn appreciates what the groundbreaking zombie movie brought to the genre, but Leah isn’t quite as impressed.

Finally, we catch up on our YouTube adventures, recent Etsy sales, and whatever else life has thrown our way.

The first 30 minutes of the show are a last-minute addition I recorded with Carrie Dahlby. She wanted to talk about “Breaking Bad” actor RJ Mitte who recently passed away. Then, the news broke about the passing of friend and colleague, legendary Emmy-Winning animation voice actor Eric Bauza. Despite the very-long length of the already recorded planned material for this episode, I felt it necessary to at least briefly talk about them on the show before we got to the fun vacation talk portion of the show. Needless to say we were and are shocked to our core at the loss of two such amazing people who were such positive lights in our time.

My main guest for this episode is my girlfriend Kalani Mitchell. We had various fun travel plans in the works for the year 2025, when reality stepped in and stopped us via Kalani discovering she had breast cancer. Over the following year she kicked its ass and is cancer free, and felt a mighty need to go on an epic vacation to make up for not getting to travel anywhere for a year and a half. So she began doing what she loved doing more than anything else, elaborately planning trips, especially if those trips are to a Disney location. I had not been on a proper trip to Florida’s Disney Parks since 2012 (when it was announced that Disney was buying Lucasfilm), and for Kalani it was even longer. So forgive for indulging as we go into great detail on the whole trip, with a couple of important specific highlights: 1. Luke’s first time riding “Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets”, and 2. Luke and Kalani dressing up as Iago and the Genie and meeting Aladdin and Abu at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

Tea, Karen and their friend Bella dive into William Castle’s 1960 supernatural gem 13 Ghosts – the Illusion-O gimmick film that gave audiences the choice to see the ghosts or not and in doing so asked one of horror’s most interesting questions: how much do you want to be scared? They cover the ultimate showmanship, the surprisingly effective mystery thriller plot underneath the gimmick, and why Castle’s participatory horror philosophy is still deeply relevant to how we think about audience and fear.

Does it stray too far from the original? Or is the song transformed into a new genre that simply doesn’t work? Or does it have more to do with our emotional attachment to the original?
