  • EnterpriseSplaining 100: The Good, The Bad and the Skagly!

Giddy-up! It’s our 100th EnterpriseSplaining episode and to “celebrate” we’re watching Star Trek: Enterprise Season 3, Episode 9 “North Star,” but only Bill has actually watched the episode. This week the Enterprise Crew finds a colony of humans, living a rootin’ tootin’ cowboy lifestyle, right down to the horses, rotgut, and hangings! As they sort out the history of these people and the opressed alien “Skags,” Archer gets close to schoolmarm Bethany, and it all ends in an old timey gunfight.  Also, we’re joined by Ryan Consell, author of the Stealing from Wizards series (which we highly rikermend and you can listen to for free via the podcast of the same name)!

    Rikermendations:
    • Ryan: The Young Necromancer’s Guide to Ghosts by Vanessa Ricci-Thode
    • Jamie: Tiny Bookshop
    • Maria:  A Nice Indian Boy
    • Bill: Hairspray (1988)

    • Hell is a Teenage Girl | Earth Station Boo

Written by Diablo Cody. Directed by Karyn Kusama. Starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried. Marketed to the absolute wrong audience and dismissed by critics who never understood what they were watching. Tea & Karen are diving deep into Jennifer’s Body, with our friend BellaRose. The 2009 feminist horror classic that Hollywood failed, audiences reclaimed, and horror fans have been obsessing over ever since. We cover the catastrophic marketing disaster, Megan Fox’s career defining performance, the sharp feminist subtext that went over everyone’s heads in 2009, and why it took the world over a decade to finally give this film the flowers it deserved.

        DOLLY

The heart of the world was broken on August 25, 2026 when the news came out that legendary singer, musician, songwriter, actor, businesswoman and philanthropist Dolly Parton passed away. • Flopcast 748: Maid of Steel

Flopcast episode 748! It might be Dragon Con weekend, but it’s still summertime, and you know what that means around here. It’s time for our annual robot-themed Top 4 1/2 List! And it’s a weird one. In honor of this year’s new Supergirl movie, we’re counting down robots on the covers of Supergirl comic books. (What?) Along the way, we’ll meet a robot man named Robotman, a four-armed robot bank robber, a robot who climbs skyscrapers King Kong-style, and perhaps even a juvenile delinquent robot from space. Will Supergirl wear a different costume in every comic we look at? ALMOST. Are we completely out of ideas for robot lists? APPARENTLY. But if you have any complaints, you can write to Supergirl’s comic book letter column, which in the early 70s was called “Super Fe-Mail.” And that should be the first thing you complain about. #robots #supergirl #dccomics #comicbooks #comics #esonetwork #eso #geektalk #geekpodcast #geek #nerdtalk #nerd #nerdpodcast #podcast #flopcast

      • We Went Viral… And Now We Have a Robin’s Donuts Dilemma!
We Went Viral… And Now We Have a Robin’s Donuts Dilemma!

        It’s birthday week around here!

Leah celebrated her 47th birthday on August 29. Shawn is getting ready to hit the big 5-0 on September 3. We’re celebrating both birthdays with a big BBQ potluck at Shawn’s dad’s place on September 5.

Before the party, we’ve been busy getting things ready. We tackled some yard work, picked up supplies, and started preparing for a pretty big family gathering.

We also talk about the many celebrity deaths we’ve seen this August. It’s been a particularly rough month for losing familiar faces. We discuss some of the biggest names we’ve lost, including Dolly Parton, Peter Cullen, Tim Curry, Ben Jones, Hayden Panettiere, and others.

Meanwhile, Leah has another update from the bee yard. Her colony continues to keep her busy, and we talk about how the bees are doing.

We also check in on our Etsy shops and share some recent sales and customer feedback. You can find both shops below.

Then comes the really big news.

        Shawn’s YouTube channel has exploded!

Most of his videos typically get somewhere between 50 and 300 views. Then, two weeks ago, he posted a video about finding his family at a yard sale.

That video has now passed 150,000 views.

Even crazier, it brought in more than 800 new subscribers and helped Shawn get accepted into the YouTube Partner Program.

It’s been an absolutely wild couple of weeks, and we talk about what it feels like watching a small channel suddenly take off.

And there’s even more YouTube news.

Leah launched her own channel this week!

My Northern Life With Leah is officially underway, so we talk about her new channel and what she’s planning to do with it.

Finally, we end the episode with one of the strangest dilemmas we’ve ever discussed on the podcast.

Shawn’s brother Robin grew up with a plush Robin’s Donuts bird. He last remembers having it in 2019, when he left Sault Ste. Marie to move to Timmins with Shawn.

Now he’s been looking for that bird.

        The problem?

There is a Robin’s Donuts plush bird currently listed in Leah’s Etsy shop.

Leah bought it in Orillia while travelling south to pick up her bee colony. That’s roughly seven hours from home.

Robin thinks the bird might actually be his. There’s a stain on the bird’s hat that he recognizes.

He wants Leah to give it back.

        Leah isn’t convinced.

After all, she bought the bird legitimately and has no way of knowing whether it really belonged to Robin seven years ago.

        So who’s right?

Should Leah give Robin the bird, or is this simply a very strange coincidence?

You’ll have to listen and decide for yourself!

As always, grab a coffee and come travel with us.

Jim talks about a Classic Sci-Fi Horror Sequel from Director Larry Cohen – 1978’s “It Lives Again,” (aka “Its Alive 2”) starring Frederic Forest, Kathleen Lloyd, John P. Ryan, John Marley, Andrew Duggan, Eddie Constantine, and James Dixon. Made as the econd film in Cohen’s “It’s Alive” Trilogy, the film centers around another couple who find themselves embroiled in the birth of a mutant baby. The government is ready to dispose of any mutant babies following the disaster of the first mutant birth four years ago. Complicating matters is an independent organization striving to save the infants. Find out more on MONSTER ATTACK!, The Podcast Dedicated To Old Monster Movies.

      • EnterpriseSplaining 99: Second Contact: Archer’s Got Brain Worms!

This week, we’re on a second contact mission, revisiting Star Trek: Enterprise Season 3, Episode 8 “Twilight,” now that Maria and Bill have watched this episode which shows us one of the worst potential future timelines where Archer and T’Pol enter into a romantic relationship and Malcolm grows a goatee (the horror!).

Also, in our Mammary Alpha segment, we learn about Star Trek makeup artist Michael Westmore and the legacy of the Westmore family in Hollywood.

A word of warning: If you haven’t listened to the episode before this one, “Archer’s Got Brain Worms!,” go listen to that first because this is a follow up to last week.
