Good Information, Horrible Reading
What did you love best about The Essential Guide to the Power of the Holy Spirit?
A good primer for the continuist position of the spiritual gifts, with helpful responses to typical ceessationist arguments. That said, there is a lot to be desired here, such as better exegesis of supporting texts, and a clearer explanation of important ideas.
Any additional comments?
The narration was dreadful. It sounded like he was trying to sell me a used car, and he had a habit of adding "s" at the end of words where it clearly should not have been. I listened to this as an audio companion to my Kindle copy, and found that his tone made it difficult to read along. It was bad enough that I would not recommend the audio book, but would suggest simply reading it instead.
this would benefit rate book if it had not been
the storyline was good the references was good I like the book but the reader was melodramatic ruin the book didn't like it didn't finish it
Good content, horrible listening experience.
How could the performance have been better?
Randy Clark is a faithful guide to the world of spiritual gifts. However, I don't understand how William Crockett was chosen as the reader. Every line--every single line--is emphasized like it's an epic pronouncement from a movie trailer. And maybe it's not him but the recording equipment, but every time he says "Holy Spirit," he pronounces it "Holy Spirits" with an -s at the end. It's very distracting. And there are other things mispronounced--mostly Greek words (but not always). The narration made for a very poor experience.
Any additional comments?
I wish Randy Clark would read his own books. As a preacher, he could do it well. I get that a lot of time is involved, but I think it's important for works like this one.
Great book/Not a great reading
Great book. Good research makes it a good introduction to scholarship but it's also very accessible.
The narration had quite a bit to be desired. It was a little overly dramatic but worse the narrator tended to put an "s" at the end of words with a "t" at the end of it. The worst example fills the book as he often referred to the Holy Spirit as the "Holy Spirits."
Poor performance ruins content
I will probably purchase the book to give the author a chance and to really focus on the story. Why? Well, the narrator is truly awful. At times he sounds like a computer generated voice. He says "spirits" instead of Spirit.
