One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 13, narrated by Isaac BirchallBromden is looking at a picture of a man flyfishing in the mountains, wishing he were there too. He imagines that he is sweeping his broom into the painting and sits on a rock to take in the whole world around him. He reflects on what it was like at the previous hospital that he was in. He says that things have improved since the old days; they have pictures on the walls, and televisions.The fog starts to roll in, and Bromden starts to realise that the reason that McMurphy can’t understand the other patients is because he doesn’t understand how safe it is to just sit back and hide in the fog.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 12, narrated by Isaac BirchallThe Men are in the new Tub Room Day Room playing a game of monopoly but with real money; 1 cent per game dollar. The game is going slow because Martini is seeing pieces and dice that don’t actually exist. The game continues with the men not really getting any further on.At another point, Bromden is describing the fog, It seems to him that McMurphy pretends not to see the fog, and that he is able to keep his cool by pretending to be overly polite to all of the staff. Just once he loses his cool. At one of the group meetings, the men refuse to back McMurphy up. He had been taking bets on the World Series of Baseball all week and suggests to the group that they change the TV time so that they can watch the game. This stuns McMurphy because everyone has bet on the game; If they all have money on the results, then why wont they vote with him! After the meeting, back in the Tub Room, Billy approaches McMurphy, and tells him that the men are afraid to vote against anything that the Nurse wants because they are going to be here a lot longer than he is; they don’t want to be punished later on. The day before the World Series is to start, McMurphy tries one last time to convince the men to vote with him…

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 11, narrated by Isaac BirchallThe boys head to the breakfast hall and McMurphy is laughing a mile a minute after his small victory over Nuse Ratched. He creates a fake story about he and Billy Bibbit running wild around a city together chasing after girls. None of the boys give him the response he is looking for though. McMurphy instead goes to tell the boys about how good things are inside the hospital when compared to his life on the work farm; in the hospital they get orange juice, and bacon and eggs, and at the work farm all they got was a burnt potato cake thing. After finishing his food, McMurphy gets up to head to the day room but is turned away, being told that they can only leave at 7:30. While waiting and watching the clock, he starts to fidget and decides to make a bet with the guys that he can hit the clock across the room with a pat of butter. He hits the wall instead, and instead of giving in he makes a new bet on how long it will take for the butter to hit the floor.In the day room the music is still blaring, and McMurphy finally goes over to the nurse’s station to ask to have it turned off, but the Nurse, with her stone set face just tells him that if she were to turn the music down for him, it would be inconsiderate for the other patients who are harder of hearing. She thinks that she has had him beat with this response, but he then suggests that the tub room gets opened up as a 2nd day room for the men to play cards in. She refuses again, and McMurphy tries to keep his cool, but “The War” has begun between the two…

No one has ever sung on the Ward before, and everyone is wondering why the Aides haven’t shut him up. Why is he treated differently, if the other patients were to act like McMurphy, they would be shut up in 2 seconds, but McMurphy is different. Maybe the reason that the Aides don’t shut McMurphy down is because they know McMurphy is out of control.McMurphy is wearing nothing but a towel, and he walks over to one of the Aides and asks him for some toothpaste, but the Aide responds that the cabinet is closed until 6:30 and McMurphy jokes with him about it being a strange thing to keep under lock and key. McMurphy goes on his way back to the washroom and starts up his singing again until the Big Nurse comes onto the Ward. She comes towards the washroom where she can “correct” his behaviour, but just as she is about to entre McMurphy cuts her off. She tells him that he cannot just walk around the ward in a towel, so McMurphy complies…

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 9, narrated by Isaac BirchallChief Bromden is experiencing his first non-medicated night in a long time. As he starts to drift off he starts to hear a deep rumbling coming from somewhere beneath him, a sound that he has never noticed before. Bromden starts to feel the dorm floor start to slip down and down, like in an elevator going further down into the belly of the building. Eventually the room stops moving, and after a couple of seconds one of the walls lifts up to show a giant factory-esque room with endless blast furnaces. Shirtless men run along suspended platforms, spinning dials, and pushing buttons. The men seem to be moving perfectly, and whenever someone slows down or falls over, the other men just throw him right into the nearest furnace. One of the men comes near the chief’s room and grabs one of the older decrepit patients and swings him onto a hook. The men then open the patient up and instead of innards, nothing but rust and ashes, falls out of his body… The nightmare continues and becomes worse as the night goes on. Bromden wants to wake up and warn everyone about what he just saw, but he knows that no one will believe him. When he does wake up however, he knows that what he saw must have happened because the patient that was on the hook is being wheeled out of the hospital.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 8, narrated by Isaac BirchallChief Bromden narrates more how he perceives the power of the Nurse on the Ward. He believes that she has the power to slow down or speed up time just by turning a dial on her control panel. She can make sure that no one has too much time with a visiting family member, or she can slow them down so that the men just have to sit alone with their thoughts for days and weeks on end to guarantee that the men suffer longer and worse than before. There is a tape that plays on loop in the day room. The music is just quiet enough to zone it out if you have been on the ward long enough, but loud enough to make any new patient start to lose their mind. McMurphy is playing cards with some of the other Acutes, and he is getting a bit antsy with the music playing over their heads. Harding tells McMurphy that pretty much everyone has zoned the music out, and Cheswick chimes in to say that the only time the music isn’t playing is when they are sleeping. Harding prods McMurphy joking that something as small as some music is going to him lose his bet against the patients. Chief then goes to describe how McMurphy plays cards. He is a true conman; he is able to lead the men into the game with his talking, drawling, and laughing, and is able to keep the men entertained enough to win all of their packets of smokes, and then at the last moment let them win back their smokes to guarantee that they keep playing.As the night goes on, the lights get dimmed, and everyone has to make their way to the nurse’s station to get their medication. After a brief altercation, the nurse’s station closes early and it becomes the first night in years that Chief Bromden has been to bed unmedicated.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 7, narrated by Isaac BirchallHarding and McMurphy continue to go at it. McMurphy tries to convince the men that they aren’t Rabbits, but are men, who can be powerful, and can fight against Nurse Ratched’s attacks. Billy Bibbit starts up, stating that the Nurse’s tactic of staying silent makes all of the men too nervous to fight back. McMurphy states that they could always just give joke answers or tell her to get lost. The other patients continue to argue with McMurphy, and eventually Harding tells him about the greater tools in the Big Nurse’s belt, the Electro-Shock Therapy machine, and the worse of all, the Lobotomy. If worse comes to worst, you will be turned into a zombie that can’t do anything but be afraid of its own shadow. McMurphy then asks why the men don’t take a vote; if the doctor was going on about letting the patients run their own ward, why don’t they act upon it. McMurphy then goes on to say that the first thing he noticed about the place was that no one was laughing… Once you lose your laugh, you lose your soul…After more bickering and debating McMurphy finally concludes. He is going to challenge the Big Nurse at her own game, and he makes a bet with the patients that he is going to make the Big Nurse break before his first week on the ward is up.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 6, narrated by Isaac BirchallBromden explains what the Therapeutic theory is, its goal is to bring any problem out into the open instead of letting it fester allowing the patients to learn how to become better members of society when they eventually integrate back into real society. Bromden then goes on to explain one point when the nurse first got the men to confess to their “Sins,” she sat in silence for 20 minutes, and after the silence broke, the men confessed to everything they had ever done, real or not, just trying to outdo each other. The Nurse’s system worked better than she could have ever hoped for. Old Pete then piped up, saying he was tired, which broke the spell over the men. Bromden then goes on to explain what happened when the aides tried to remove Pete from the meeting, he fought off the aides and was only quieted down after he had exerted all of the energy he had left and after he said all that he had to say. At 2PM the meeting ends, and from the point that they finished talking about McMurphy, all of the men were laying into Harding. They go and bring the tables back into the room, but all of the patients feel bad about what they did to Harding. After the tables are back in the room, McMurphy goes to talk to Harding about what just happened in the meeting. He asks if that is how the meeting usually go, and Harding responds at first by telling McMurphy that though the method can seem strange to the untrained eye, what just happened in the meeting was for Harding’s benefit. However, after being further challenged by McMurphy, Harding breaks down and admits that the Therapeutic Theory is nothing but harmful and degrading and that the Big Nurse is nothing but a Power-Hungry Bully.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 5, narrated by Isaac BirchallThe fog is rolling in around the chief again and he is trying to fight it so that he can keep an eye on the new guy. Around 1, the fog fades away and the tables are moved for the meeting. The Doctor walks in and takes his seat, everyone else sits too, the Big Nurse entering last to command the room.As soon as she sits down, one of the patients starts Wailing about how tired he is, but she doesn’t pay him and attention while she gathers her papers together. The Nurse then sets her watch and takes out her folder to start the meeting, no one is watching her except for McMurphy, looking to understand what the Big Nurse is getting at; she is just as wary as he is. The meeting starts with the Nurse talking about Harding’s issues with his wife, his jealousy issues, and his issues with his wife’s belief that any action by a man that isn’t “macho” is “dandy.” McMurphy interrupts the meeting to make a rude comment, and almost takes the Big Nurse off guard, but she keeps her cool and decides to have a look at McMurphy’s folder instead of Harding’s. She reads through his history and talks to the Doctor about just how McMurphy ended up in the hospital.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 4, narrated by Isaac BirchallThe Big nurse is sitting behind her glass window and is filling a bunch of needles with chemicals. She is asked by one of the small nurses what she thinks about the New Inmate McMurphy. The Big Nurse replies that McMurphy is a manipulator, and that she doubts if McMurphy is intact insane, and says that he could just be looking for free Bed and Board. She reminisces about how previous troublemakers were dealt with, and the small nurse interrupts her by asking why someone would want to disrupt the peace. The Chief then goes on to describe the Nurse’s demeanour, she wants everything in perfect condition, and has tried her best to make everything inside the hospital perfect. But as she cannot be on the ward 24/7, she has also tried to change the outside world (what the chief calls « The Combine ») to be perfect too; a world of precision and perfection, where everyone who won’t obey her is in a hospital. The chief then goes onto explain how the Nurse created her staff. She forces everyone « decent » off of the ward until she could find a doctor who would let her be in charge of the ward. The Aides were brought in only to Hate, she found 3 men that run on hate, and hate only; they hate the nurse, the patients, everyone who isn’t an Aide, and they probably hate each other too. After a long while, the nurse and her aides became able to communicate only on hate, and the Aides act out her wishes without the Big Nurse having to open her mouth.The Chief then goes on to describe the patients. The long-term patients, and referred to as Chronics, and the newer admissions, usually inside by self-admission, are called Acutes.The Chief then describes the general schedule of each day. Breakfast, showers, shaving, medication, puzzles and cards and magazines.He then recounts the story of a Chronic who didn’t react well to taking pills that he didn’t know. He explains what happens to people who don’t comply and it’s very very grim.Then the « Public Relations » guy comes in and walks some nurses/residents and explains to them how much things have improved over the past few decades...
