The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck chapter 25 - Narrated by Isaac Birchall
In the chapter, the Narrator watches the horrors of California. The war for profits is raging, and the workers are forced to work for a less than livable wage (who could have guessed). All of this is then made worse by the extent that these businessmen are willing to go. There are too many crops for even the migrants to pick, but because profits are so important, the food is made to go to waste, and is burnt or thrown in rivers, just so the migrants and people of California are forced to buy food instead of finding it.

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck chapter 24, Narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this chapter, the leaders of the camp prepare for the dance that they hold at least once a month. But thanks to the help of one of Tom's employers, the leaders now know that there are plans for a fight, which would allow the sheriffs to intervene in the camp and disturb the natural order of the camp.
The dance begins. Tom is called upon for guard duty, where he checks people at the gate, to verify who invited them to the dance, and tries to figure out who could be there to start a fight.  With the help of another, the troublemakers are spotted and an eye is kept upon them before they start their fight.  The men are found out, and are thrown from the dance only after questioning from the leaders of the camp.

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, chapter 22, Narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this Chapter, The family makes their way towards the Weedpatch Government camp. The family has their first stroke of luck in a while, there is 1 spot in the camp that is available for them. They make there way to the camp, and they set up and go to sleep. In the morning, Tom awakens and goes on a wander, he meets 2 people who tell him about a job over a shared breakfast.  They all set off together, and Tom has the first job of the family.
Ruthie and Winfield, wander around the camp and they discover the first flushing toilet of their lives. they test it, and Ruthie and Winfield think they  break it when the first pull the chain flush. They run scared to their mother. Ma goes to inspect the "broken" toilet, and laughs when she finds out what happened. She then sets to work cooking and trying to prepare their camp for their inspection and visit from the 3 committee members.
The committee meets the Joad family. They take Ma around the whole camp, and they explain fully how the camp works. It is reliving for them to know that if they cannot find work, then they can work around the camp to help pay for their stay. All Seems to be well...
The Joad children walk around the camp and find another group of kids. Ruthie tries to  bully her way in and comes to realise that if she continues to behave like that, then she shan't be welcomed by the others. The men go around and se if they can try and find some work, but they find they there is nothing around, and they they had wasted fuel for nothing. The woman who attacked Rose of Sharon returns and Ma gives back just as good as she can, and the woman feints and fades away.

In this chapter, the Narrator describes the scene of droves of cars and people, moving all over looking for work. The "Proper" owners and "proper" people of California are hostile towards the migrants. They group together to guard themselves against the migrants. They are so different from anything they had ever seen before, and to justify their actions, rumors spread, and cruelty followed.

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, chapter 20 - 1, Narrated by Isaac Birchall
The family goes to the coroners office to bury Grandma properly, so she is forced to settle for a pauper's grave. The family then decides to go toward the Hooverville where they are accosted by an old man for asking if they could stay there. They then start to unpack, and Tom goes on a walk to find out what's going on here and to see if he can find a job anywhere.
 Ma starts cooking the the Hooverville, as Pa comes back after trying to find some meat, he finds a hoard of Children that have gathered around their stew pot, all with hungry eyes.  Tom and Casey have another talk about life and what's going to happen now they're in California.
Rose of Sharon and Connie talk about their new lives in California, and he laments that he maybe should have stayed in Sallisaw and studied tractors. Ma talks more with the children around the pot of food. Al meets Floyd and Al helps him finish the work on his car. As a thanks Floyd lets him know about the work situation and tells him about a potential job that may be coming up.
a Chevy then enters the camp, a man steps out with handbills in his hand. He walks around the camp, and everyone in intimidated. He asks if they need work, and the men ask him what kind of of pay they're offering. The man cannot answer the questions and he gets angry at them for their questions. The man calls to his car and deputy steps out. He grabs Floyd and tries to take him in for no reason at all. Then suddenly Tom steps in...
After the scuffle Tom has to go and find Uncle John who has gone off to drink. He walks all along the road and eventually finds him singing drunkenly along the side of the road. He takes him back to the truck and the family has to go away. They drive along he road, and eventually find a huge group of men that are seemingly ready to lynch any "Oakie" that they come across/ The family is forced to find another route, and they come across the scene of the Hooverville camp, up in Flames.

In this Chapter, the narrator tells the story of California. It was once owned by Mexico, but the hungry American squatters took it from them. Their decedents now see the land as being theirs, and thus defend it. They defend it not through violence, but through low wages, by not providing enough to live, then the "Oakies" cannot overthrow them... you need food for a revolution.

The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, Chapter 18, Narrated by Isaac Birchall
The Joad family make their way through the mountains, and finally into California, Just one thing lies between them and the "promised land", the desert. The family pulls up along side a river and decide to bath and take a run at the desert at night when it isn't as hot. There they meet another family who tells them they they are returning home from California because they couldn't find any work.
Grandma continues on her downward spiral, Ma stays with her and fans her down. Then she is visited by a "spiritual woman" who claims that the worst is going to happen if she does not perform a grace over Grandma. Ma refuses her offer, and the woman goes scornfully off, only sing a lamenting chant with her other "spiritual" friends.  Then, later, Ma is awoken by a police officer who tells her that she needs to move on by tomorrow morning lest he and maybe more force them to leave.
Ma goes all around looking for the men, to let them know that the police offer says that they have to be gone by the morning. She is relived to find Tom safe after the Police officer's visit, and he lets her know that Noah has gone down the river to live off of fish and the land.
In this chapter, the Joad family prepares to tackle the desert at night. They speak to the Wilsons about their plan, and are told that Sairy is far too sick to move on, and that they will be staying until she is fine.  Casey is invited to see her, and they speak about life before she asks him to pray for her.  Before setting off, the family offers them the last of their money.

The cars move along the highway, slugging along. The days are spent driving,  and in the evenings, the farmers settle down on the sides of the highways, more and more join. The families merge slowly into one, and as they continue on their journey west, they change. No longer farmers, but "Migrant Men".

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck chapter 16 - 1, narrated by Isaac Birchall,
In this chapter, the Joad family continues on their journey across America. The highway becomes their new home, and they develop a routine that makes loading and unloading the cars easier every time. After a couple of days however, one of the cars starts to make a very strange noise, forcing the families to have to investigate. The Wilson's car has broken down again, and Tom and Casey offer to stay behind and fix it. Ma refuses at first but is eventually worn down to letting them stay and fix it while the others go ahead.
Tom then manages to take out the broken parts on the car while waiting for Al to come back with the working truck that can take them to town to try and find a part. Al takes a while, and during this time, Casey and Tom talk about life, and about the people moving forwards across the land.  Al and Tom make there way to town and the junk yard where they come across the very strange worker whom says that they can take whatever they want from the truck yard.
Tom and Al work hard together in order to install the new parts for the broken down car. They eventually get it fixed and start to make their way with Casey towards the camp where Al left the rest of the family. When they arrive they are accosted by the manager who tells them, that they need to pay, even though their family has already paid. After arguing, they eventually settle down and discuss with a group of men around the manager about what is facing them in the west. A man tells them what he has seen there; a horrid tale about too many workers and not enough work. The men protest and say that he is lying, but the idea sticks with them as they make their way to bed for the evening.
