Fourth and final episode in our series exploring the Young Lawyer International Program. After exploring the world, it's time to come back home. We meet with Laura MacLean who just came back from her placement 3 months ago and Mathieu Delorme who did the program 7 years ago, let's see what they are up to now.

The first stop is Laura MacLean in Ottawa. She’s currently a staff lawyer at La Clinique Juridique Francophone D’Ottawa working primarily on immigration files. She interned in Durban, South Africa working for Lawyers for Human Rights in the Refugee and Migrant Rights Program in 2019.

Our next guest is Mathieu Delorme also in Ottawa. He’s currently a labour lawyer for a public service union. He went to Grahamstown South Africa in 2011 to intern at the Legal Resources Centre there.did his internship in Grahamstown, South Africa in 2011-2012.

Ray meets with Lorin McDonald, a lawyer from Toronto who was born with profound hearing loss in both ears. They discuss her journey through law school, the Accessible Canada Act (passed on May 29) and more!

When we think about diversity, we tend to think about race, sexual orientation and gender identity, but there are other types of diversity to be aware of as well, religious differences for example or the differently abled. Lorin answers questions like: What led you to decide to become a lawyer, at age 41? What type of accommodations do you need to practice law with a hearing loss? What do you think leaders of law organizations can do to make their organizations more welcoming to people with sensory disabilities?

Part 1: In this episode Ray will be talking with Anne McLellan, counsel with Bennett Jones in Edmonton, who has risen to the top of Canada’s federal political spectrum and lives to tell the tale.

Anne McLellan earned her bachelor’s and law degrees at Dalhousie, then went on to earn a Master of Laws at King’s College London. She spent 20 years in academia, teaching law at the University of New Brunswick and the University of Alberta, before jumping into politics. She spent her entire political career as a cabinet minister: Health Minister and Justice Minister under Prime Minister Jean Chretien, and Deputy Prime Minister under Paul Martin.

Mrs McLellan answers questions like: What was law school like for a woman in the early 70s? What advice do you have for girls and women considering careers in the law, or politics, or who are interested in serving on boards?

In this episode, Ray meets Charlene Theodore, 2nd Vice-President of the Ontario Bar Association, who is the first black woman to occupy this position. He also meets with David A Curry, Crown Attorney in Digby, Nova Scotia, to discuss his experience as a black and Mi’kmaq lawyer.

Charlene and David are young lawyers hoping to change the face of the law in their communities. They talk privilege, mental health, leadership development for racialized lawyers, the climate for a black lawyer in Nova Scotia, and being disrespected by court staff because they look different from the dominant group.
