  • PQ 126: The Future Of Data Center Fabrics – IETF 99
Recorded live at IETF 99, this Priority Queue episode is a roundtable conversation on new and emerging ideas for data center fabrics.
Greg Ferro is joined by Jeff  Tantsura, a chair of the routing working group at IETF; Russ White, a network architect at LinkedIn; and Tony Przygienda, who works for a vendor and claims to be the only grownup in this conversation. (You be the judge!)
They discuss why efforts such as TRILL and SPB failed to gain traction, and then dive into BGP EVPN, Routing In Fat Trees (RIFT), and other protocols.
Thanks to Huawei, which covered travel and accommodations to enable the Packet Pushers to attend IETF 99 and record some shows to spread the news about IETF projects and initiatives.

  • Datanauts 100: Ask Me Anything
The Datanauts celebrate their 100th episode with an Ask Me Anything-style show.
Chris Wahl and Ethan Banks answer questions about the future of object storage; VXLAN, VTEP and getting traffic out of the data center (nice to know people didn’t hold back); and how to become a full-stack engineer.
Listeners also wanted to know what advice the hosts would give themselves if they could travel back in time to the start of their podcasting journeys, which episodes they’re most proud of, and unexpected or surprising things they’ve learned.
Thanks to everyone who tuned in for the first hundred shows and offered encouragement, constructive criticism, and show ideas. Let us know what you want to hear in the next batch!

  • PQ 125: In-Situ OAM And Telemetry Is Magic – IETF 99
Today’s Priority Queue explores In-situ OAM (IOAM), an IETF initiative to enable per-packet telemetry information to be collected and extracted from the network. OAM stands for Operations, Administration, and Maintenance.
IOAM provides real-time data to understand how traffic is performing and to track the path packets take. IOAM adds a tag to each packet, and every node through which the packet passes can write metadata to the tag, such as the node’s identity, the interface and egress ports, and other details.
Greg Ferro is joined by Cisco engineers Shweta Bhandari, Frank Brockner, and Carlos Pignataro, all of whom are contributing to the IOAM project. They discuss the details of IOAM,  how it works, and potential use cases.

  • Datanauts 099: Understanding Microservices
Microservices is an application architecture that assembles applications from discrete components and services that are loosely coupled. These components and services are linked together over a network and interact via APIs.
By working with decoupled components, you can change and update individual elements without having to update the entire application stack. This can speed up release cycles and enable more flexible operations.
At the same time, however, distributed systems can be vulnerable to issues such as latency and connectivity problems.
The Datanauts drill into the pros and cons of microservices to help you understand if this is the right approach for your organization.
They also look at the infrastructure impacts of this architecture, and discuss ways to transition to microservices without blowing up your applications. They also look at the relationship between microservices and cloud native applications.
Our guest is Bryan Boreham, Director of Engineering at Weaveworks.

  • PQ 124: Cloud SBC Security & Analytics With Sonus Networks (Sponsored)
Today on Packet Pushers Priority Queue, a unified communications (UC) discussion with Sonus Networks, our sponsor for this episode.
While most conversations about UC revolve around performance, we’re going to drill into issues around security and analytics.
We discuss how and why UC is vulnerable and the kinds of threats that can be perpetrated against it (DDoS, toll fraud, exfiltration, espionage, and others).
We also examine at how session border controllers (SBCs) can be used as a kind of firewall to provide a measure of validation and protection against UC-based threats. In addition, we look at the advantages of cloud-based SBCs when it comes to collecting and making use of analytics.
Our guest is Kevin Isacks, VP of Engineering for Sonus Networks.

  • Datanauts 098: The Changing Face Of Application Acceleration
Today on the Datanauts, we move up the stack to think about Web application delivery.
How are Web pages actually delivered to a client? What’s the role of the client vs. the role of the server these days? What do new protocols like HTTP/2 and SPDY bring to the party?
From an infrastructure perspective, how do we make sure we’re optimizing the performance and user experience? If the last thing you got excited about with HTTP was pipelining, stay tuned to catch up with the latest on application acceleration.
Our guest is Lori MacVittie, Principal Technical Evangelist at F5 Networks. She and the Datanauts discuss the changes in application architecture as we’ve migrated from the early days of e-commerce to Web 2.0 to the current era of mobile devices and APIs.
They also drill into acceleration options such as CDNs, image optimization, and compression, and then explore HTTP/2 and SPYDY.

  • Advocating For Enterprise Interests At The IETF – IETF 99
It’s not well understood that the IETF is a group of volunteers. Anyone who turns up, participates, and contributes can be a part of the process. In practice, real contributions are made by those people who have the support of their employers.

As enterprise IT has cut costs, enterprise participation in the IETF has been reduced to almost nothing.
In this show I talk to Darren Petis about his IETF participation with the backing of his enterprise employer and the value that it brings.
Darren is part of the Enterprise Data Center Operators (EDCO) group. Its goal is to represent enterprise interests in standards bodies and regulations, and to encourage and coordinate collaboration and to monitor protocol changes.

  • PQ 123: DMARC And Email Authentication – IETF 99
The Priority Queue returns to the IETF to talk with Kurt Andersen, who’s working on the DMARC initiative.
DMARC is an email authentication and reporting protocol that builds on existing DKIM and SPF authentication standards.
The goal of DMARC is to help domain owners who follow proper authentication protocols ensure that mail gets delivered, and to understand why some mail may not be reaching recipients. Mailing lists and email forwarding services often break the authentication chain, and one of DMARC’s goals is to fix this problem.
You can read all the DMARC documents here.

  • Datanauts 097: Unpacking Azure Stack For Hybrid Clouds
Azure Stack is a recent offering from Microsoft that aims to recreate IaaS and PaaS capabilities in the public cloud (pools of compute, storage, and networking that can be easily consumed by developers and applications) in your own data center.
One goal of Azure Stack is to enable the fabled hybrid cloud, in which developers can use the same tools and processes to write applications and run workloads either on premises or in the Azure public cloud. As today’s guest puts it, Azure Stack is meant to be an extension of Azure.
Today on the Datanauts, we unpack Azure Stack to get a closer look at its primary components, explore the rationale for adopting Azure Stack, look at integrated systems that support it (and are required to run Azure Stack), and point listeners to resources to let them play around with the technology.
Our guest is Ned Bellavance, Director, Cloud Solutions at Anexinet, a VAR and systems integrator. You can follow him on Twitter or check out his blog at nedinthecloud.com. Ned also podcasts at Anexinet Insights.

  • IoT Interoperability And The F-Interop Platform – IETF 99
Today in the Community Channel, Greg Ferro speaks with Remy Leone about the F-Interop Platform, a European project to simplify interoperability testing for IoT networking.
As the Web site states, the F-Interop Platform provides “remote interoperability, conformance and performance tests for the Internet of Things.”
Greg and Remy discuss how the platform works and the goals of the project. You can get more details at the Web site. You can also follow Remy on Twitter.
This podcast was recorded at the IETF 99 meeting in July 2017. Thanks to Huawei, which covered travel and accommodations to enable the Packet Pushers to attend IETF 99.
