Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.
Elaina tells the story of how she finally got out. In the months before she left, her husband's beliefs had spiraled into something she says she could no longer separate from reality: hours of preaching, accusations that she wasn't cooperating, and a demand that she help "save the planet." The night he told her he might need to kill her to get what was inside her, she lay still for five hours, then walked out the front door at dawn and called the sister she hadn't spoken to in a year. Leaving wasn't the end. She talks about months of threats, a visit from the FBI, the PTSD and panic attacks that got worse before they got better, and why she says "why didn't you just leave?" is the wrong question. Then comes the part nobody warns you about: divorcing a man no one will help you find, including a newspaper ad. Somatic therapy, and what it did for her, is a conversation for next time.
Content note: this episode includes discussion of psychological abuse, threats of violence, and PTSD.

We're pausing mid-series to answer the question you keep asking us: do we agree with Elaina? Short answer — no, but that was never the point. Jordan and Anida talk through why the show isn't built to debate the people we interview, what empathy looks like when someone's experience is nothing like your own, and why hypocrisy — not theology — is usually what actually pushes people out the door. It turns into a bigger conversation about accountability, how we're raised, and the culture-wide division showing up everywhere from church splits to the headlines. Not a rebuttal to Elaina's story — a clarification of ours, before we head into part four.
Content note: this episode touches on spiritual abuse, domestic abuse, and references current events involving violence and sexual coercion.

Elaina picks up her story at the altar. Married at 21 after years of purity rings and abstinence-only teaching, she describes how the promise of a "blessed" wedding night gave way to a marriage where submission was treated as duty and saying no wasn't an option — teaching she says she heard from the pulpit in every church she attended. She talks about learning to check out to survive, being made to confess an emotional affair in front of her church, running to California, and being pressured back with the words "God hates divorce." The marriage was already coming apart, and what happened in its final months is where we pick up next time.
Content note: this episode includes discussion of sexual coercion, domestic abuse, and suicide.

Elaina continues her story, growing up in a strict, fear-based home where discipline, demons, and God were all tangled together, and how that shaped her earliest sense of safety and self. She talks candidly about the fear that defined her childhood, the distance in her relationship with her father, and the turning point when she left for Bible college in Texas, finding community and joy for the first time, even as her understanding of God began to change.

Elaina spent over a decade as a worship leader — signed to a label, singing on stages to millions of streams with the group Worship Mob — before she stopped believing the things she needed to believe to stay. In this first conversation, she traces the early unraveling: a lifelong struggle with the doctrine of hell, the books that cracked it open (including Rob Bell's Love Wins), and the slow, messy realization that the God she'd been taught to fear didn't match the love she'd been taught to trust.
