What does the #CaliforniaWildfires show about #incomeequality?
The catastrophic wildfires rapidly spreading across California highlight, with jarring clarity, the deep income divide between the rich and the poor. In recent years, tens of thousands, of people have lost their homes, from trailer parks, to apartment complexes, to luxury homes and mansions. But it is not the fires themselves that expose California’s wealth gap, rather it is the aftermath of the fires themselves that determine who gets to effectively reset their lives back to normal, and who gets to live with housing insecurity for years afterwards.
Wealthy victims of the fires have iron-clad insurance policies they use to rebuild homes sometimes worth more than the homes destroyed in the fires, but the poor don‘t fare so well; they lose everything in their homes, and years later, still have nothing.

Representative Katie Hill, a Democratic Congresswoman serving California’s 25th Congressional District, has resigned in light of allegations of sexual misconduct with one of her staffers. The allegations come in the wake of the #MeToo movement, which shed light on countless sexual misconduct allegation across people in powerful positions in media, entertainment, tech, and more.
Some critiC’s are calling Rep Hill’s hasty resignation unnecessary because, after all, men in her position do the exact same thing all the time, and their careers rarely ever suffer for it. Recently, Representative John Conyers of Michigan passed away; before he died, he too resigned from office in light of sexual misconduct allegations. However, his resignation came after serving for decades, and he still had an illustrious, robust political career before he left office.
Are women in positions of power held to higher moral standards than their male counterparts? Is there a double standard of sexual misconduct for women? Or, in the age of #MeToo, should women be held to the same standards as men when sexual misconduct allegations arise?

Today's American economy is characterized by a tight labor market whereby employers require strict qualifications (advanced degrees, years on years of experience, good credit scores, and -- in some cases -- minimal student loan debt) for menial, entry-level positions that provide no health benefits, retirement policies, or room for advancement. As a result, many folks have turned to freelancing, or selling services by the hour, day, job, etc., rather than working on a regular salary basis for one employer, in order to earn income.
The thing is, everyone is experiencing this tight labor market at the same time, and as a consequence, almost everyone does some amount of freelancing on the side -- even when they have traditional jobs. Thus, freelancers find themselves competing with other freelancers in what is becoming a very crowded freelancing landscape.
How, then, does your typical freelancer earn viable, sustainable, and consistent income in this packed freelancing market? Tune in to find out what Harriet -- who has freelanced for the better part of the past 10 years -- has to say.
