Some marriage habits may look strange from the outside but after 26 years, a few of ours have quietly protected our connection, unity, and faith.
From sharing one duvet to scheduling intimacy and making decisions that make no sense on paper, these seven practices have shaped our Christian marriage.
Yes, we share one duvet! For us, it became a lighthearted symbol of the unity we want throughout our relationship. We also spent nearly 12 years sleeping in a tiny bed because we valued closeness and because our room was very small.
One practice that sounds less romantic is scheduling intimacy. After having children, we realized that if we were not intentional, it simply might not happen. Planning does not remove romance; it communicates that our connection matters enough to protect.
Some choices carried a far greater cost.
Shamira left a successful private-banking career even though she was earning substantially more than Hugues. Becoming a full-time mother affected our finances and her professional identity, but twenty years later, we remain grateful for the time it gave her with our children.
We also talk and pray through decisions until we both experience peace and unity. We process at different speeds, which can create friction. Yet we have learned that when we wait for God’s direction instead of treating each other like opponents, our differences become strengths.
At the beginning of each year, we set aside 24 hours to pray separately. We then come together and share what we believe God has spoken. Again and again, He has brought unity, direction, and dreams for the next season.
Our marriage has also taken us through five countries in seven years. Every move brought new cultures, languages, churches, friendships, paperwork, and daily routines. We would not naturally choose so much change, but God has used it to strengthen and prepare us.
Many of our biggest decisions made little sense on paper: leaving secure employment, renting out our family home, taking our teenagers into missions, homeschooling, and moving before knowing exactly how everything would work.
Obedience did not always give us the complete plan. Often, God showed us only the next step. Past testimonies now remind us that He remains faithful, even when we cannot yet see the answer.
