The lead up to Christmas and the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens fell around the same time, so we have a bunch of prints relating to the two.

Don't worry about spoilers because John hadn't seen the movie at the time of this recording.

We printed off 2 Yoda bowls with varying results.

Happy late Thanksgiving!

A few weeks ago, Michael Molitch-Hou from 3D Printing Industry wrote a sizable article about Avi Reichental leaving 3D Systems. It didn't paint the best picture of Avi and brought up a lot of allegations of mismanagement. A large amount of companies were bought up during his time as CEO and many of them didn't seem to be well integrated.

Jake and John have worked with 3D Systems as resellers and share some of their personal observations. They go into detail about their dislike of the closed source spool system, ask why the Culinary Labs are opening while other facilities are closing and read an opposing viewpoint from the comments section.

John returns to the show and discusses three new crowdfunded printers (and one older one).

We had a few subscribers ask about the E3D BigBox printer, so we gave our first impressions of it. Auto-leveling is a big plus as well as the customizability. If everything works as shown, it may be a serious competitor of the LulzBot Taz 5 (and 6 coming next year).

The TinyBoy printer was featured on episode 43 alongside the M3D Micro. The TinyBoy 2 is now on Indiegogo and has about a week left to meet its goal. We like the more professional look and injection molded parts. It's still ultra compact but slightly more powerful than the previous version.

The iBox Nano is another compact machine, but resin-based rather than FDM. The small footprint and price (starting at $300) are very appealing if the small build size isn't an issue.

Finally, we've been following the Pirate3D Buccaneer story for quite some time and they released a new update last month. In order to obtain additional funding, they can no longer fulfill the rest of the Kickstarter rewards as advertised. After reworking the design and building up some funds, they promise to send out the rest of the printers to their backers.

John was out of town so Eric hopped in.

Jake and John discuss some cases where 3d printing is a viable option for short run manufacturing. Injection molding is expensive, but surface finish and strength are typically much better. Some say that injection molding services will lose business to 3D printing, but Jake and John think that it will actually help grow the industry.

A while ago, we had a fan duct melt on one of our Replicator 2's. We (Eric) recently printed a replacement, but in PLA. It worked fine for a few days, but ended up causing quite a mess.

Here are a couple of prints we tried.

We've talked about prosthetic devices before, but e-Nable recently put out a challenge for the community to print 1000 hands by the end of October. We talk a bit about the e-Nable hand and another  group based out of Fargo (Protosthetics). Their arm, called PAL (Printed Artificial Limb), uses Mio electronics and even has an elbow.

At the end of the show, Jake wanted to talk about PaperCube's 3D printed articulated rhino. Amaochan has been featured on Thingiverse twice and can also be found on Facebook (mostly in Chinese).

We can hardly believe it's already been a year! We haven't posted every week, but we're doing our best.

First, Jake and John talk about a few new products from F3DP's daughter company 3Dom USA: Wound Up coffee filament and Dyna-Purge® 3D Clean™.

PRINT THAT THING raps about 3D printing and mentioned Wound Up.

Eric joined the Fargo 3D Printing crew about a year ago, so he took over the second half of the episode to talk about skateboarding and 3D printing.

Jenkem Mag had a pretty critical review of the first SLS 3D printed skateboard.

Creatr made a Penny Board that doesn't work yet, but the board portion is fully 3D printed.

It appears that Cavity Boards is no longer around, but they made a really cool board out of ABS.

Italian maker Fantasmino made a functioning Penny Board by adding a skeleton made of steel rods.

3D printed skateboards are still a bit hit and miss, but some really interesting accessories are made possible with additive manufacturing.

3D Hubs recently reached 20,000 printers worldwide! They share monthly reports about trends relating to 3D printing such as locations, printers of choice and what is being printed.

We covered most of the topics, but highlighted the highest rated printers, trending printers and where 3D printing is most prevalent (according to 3D Hubs).
