Where do you go when you've gone too far? That's the question Neil Van Ness faces as his carefully constructed life unravels before his eyes. The first blow comes with the discovery of his wife's affair, betraying and devastating both a friendship and a marriage. The second comes from a news report on TV when Neil learns he's the target of a nationwide manhunt by the FBI for the murder of his parents 15 years ago - a crime he didn't commit. It's not only the FBI who's pursuing Neil, so is a sadistic killer with an agenda and a secret, a murderer who's using every possible resource within the FBI to track down the only man who knows the truth.

A thriller that kept me on the edge of my chair
I thoroughly enjoyed Dalen's first novel, finding the characters realistic, and the plot plausible and also exciting. The character of Michael Demming was particularly well crafted, evil but with a purpose -- and hardly the caricature one sometimes finds in the villains of such tales. A bad guy is scary, a bad guy who is also a psychopath is more frightening, and a bad guy psychopath in a position of power (in this case the FBI), scarier still. Demming is the psychopath in a position of power squared.
I immediately felt myself sympathizing with Neil Van Ness, the protagonist of the tale, but also wondering -- what was really going on. The story didn't disappoint, as the story of Neil's parent's brutal death was revealed, and the true character of assistant director Demming came to light. I thought the role played by Special Agent Miller helped to redeem the FBI's name in a story that could have easily turned into a conspiracy yarn.
My only (minor) criticism would be Dalen took too long resolving the Neil-Cathy-Becky love triangle at the end. Otherwise, an action packed thriller and a great read.
Thrilling
Lots of action and thrilling situations.
Could have spared us some of the sordid details.
I hope the author will write some more books.
A real good read!
I'm an audiobook fan, since I spend so much time on the road -- but I'm also a suspense fan, so finding something unabridged and in the suspense genre was like a double-bonus treat.
"The Fear of The Dark" is good suspense, with characters that I could relate to and root for (or against). The tension is tightened and then loosened, and the turn of events seem surprising at first but then make perfect sense.
The reader does a good job, though his female voices (particularly Becky) are weak. Sometimes he takes long pauses making the story seem slower at times than it should. At other times, the pauses help the suspense. Maybe that was what he was trying to achieve. For the most part it works out all right.
The climax was very well staged, an exciting and fitting conclusion. It hits all the right notes. And the outcome of Neil Van Ness was particularly surprising, the final chapter exceptionally well written and bittersweet. It made me pause for several minutes and consider the irony of the situation. I even listened to the last chapter again just to re-experience it.
I'd be very interested in any of Eric Dalen's other work, if it's available. Anybody know?
A good listen.
I enjoyed this. It had all the elements I like without a lot of boring stuff. The chase part in Vegas is great. The courtroom part is too long.
