The Progressive House genre has always been something that I closely identify with, and in part, it's defined me as a DJ. It's the the kind of music that I feel in my heart and soul, and it truly speaks to me. With its pulsating rhythms, cerebral tones, and inspiring vibes, it can be either melancholy or melodic, but to me, progressive house is at its' best when it combines elements of both. It's when glistening melodies, scenic soundscapes, and dulcet tones are juxtaposed against pensive, meditative, and often spiritual groundings, invoking a sense of yearning, with a cosmic perspective. When it's instrumental, it communicates thoughts and emotions without words, and can transport you.
But sadly, it kinda went away for awhile, especially in terms of Beatport's classification anyway. Somewhere around 2010, we started to see a gradual morphing of the genre. The sounds became bigger and noisier, the buildups longer and more intense, and the breakdowns became massive, leading to an overblown, predictable style, that soon evolved into what became known as EDM. But really, it became a commercial, clubby, festival sound.
I'll be honest with you, there are some elements of it that I like, and still do. EDM isn't without merit, it was simply a sign of the times, and a generational changing of the guard. In fact, I'm actually glad the EDM movement happened, because it broadened the scope of mainstream American audiences to an even wider sound palette, which expanded the realm of possibilities for house and electronic music in general.
Throughout my almost 30 year career as a DJ, I've seen music styles come and go, in an organic cycle of action and reaction… ebb and flow. But inherently, that's the beauty of electronic music… it evolves.
Some of the progressive house producers either adapted and embraced this new style, while others shied away and side stepped into tech-house, techno, or deep house, and true progressive house became harder and harder to find. Thankfully, and finally in September of 2016, Beatport responded to the number one request by their customers, and re-categorized over half a million tracks, creating a new classification called Big Room, and making way for the progressive house genre to return to it's roots once again, with the proper designation, and a modern reincarnation.
